Happy Birthday, Sammy! Rock on Man!
Happy Birthday, Sammy! Rock on Man!
HDB, SAM! Here's a video of two of my favorite mando people.
Breedlove Quartz FF with K&K Twin - Weber Big Horn - Fender FM62SCE
Wall Hangers - 1970's Stella A and 60's Kay Kraft
Whether you slow your roll or mash on it, enjoy the ride.
@ Greg....Hot Dayum on that video!
That makes me old. . . . But not as old as Sammy.
I'm thinking there's one cat can pull off 60, or 70 for that matter, with some style.
Sam if you're reading this, Thank You and Happy Birthday.
BTW Mr. Bush also plays the h@ll out ofa fiddle.
That video with Mike Marshall is awesome...not to hijack the thread, but it really shows how great a mando player Marshall is. While his influence in jazz, choro and Dawg styles is most prominent, he has a great bluegrass sound too. Of course Sam is fantastic too!
No bout a doubt it, fellas, that's a great duo. Here's to many more years from both of them!

Properly MASHED!!!!
Molon Labe
More country, but then there's Emmy!
It's hard to imagine how good this band was unless you saw them live, which I did several times, thank God! Sat beside Sam at the bar talking, just like a hundered other guys I've sat beside at a bar, real people!
Sam is the Man! Here's one of my favorites.....sure has to slum with those bandmates though
Re the NGR foursome...I've been able to keep tabs on the careers of Sam, Bela and John C....and they're all doing FINE...thank you very much!
What's up with Pat Flynn? Anyone know? He's a fantastic guitarist! Just wondering if he's doing well these days. Tried to look him up on Google and Youtube. Nuttin' out there for the past couple of years that I could find.
And not NGR but
that group that did so much with progressive bluegrass....Tony Rice, Gerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor, Mark Schatz, Edgar Meyer...all have great extended careers. Love these musicians. Strength in Numbers...that's what I'm thinking of.

Strength in Numbers were other worldly! Saw them with Maura O'Connell. awesome!
I interviewed Sam once and he said something that always intrigued me. We were talking about different recording sessions he'd done, some where he had to play things that were worked out pretty much note for note versus looser, more freewheeling sessions where what he played was more spontaneous. He said this:
"Some of the prettiest things I play are the mistakes I make."
Made me think all those years ago when I edited the tape for broadcast. Still does today. Happy Birthday to one of the true mandolin greats!
