I've been waiting on this one for several months and the suspense is finally over! I was really tempted to do the old "in progress/can't wait" postings but given the situation, decided to wait for the finished product.

The "situation" was this - it took a fair amount of coaxing to persuade my older brother, whose previous efforts included a Danelectro style "Longhorn" bass and a "Bass VI" ( a la Fender), to build an electric mandolin. He just wasn't sure he could go miniature. As it turned out, he opted to build a pair. Since our musical influences and playing dates back to the '60s, we agreed that the style should be something retro. OK, different. Very non-traditional!

Growing up, I thought the Vox Phantom was just about the goofiest looking guitar I'd ever laid eyes on. But like a lot of things (beer, banjos and single malt scotch) that didn't catch my fancy as a kid, age changed my tastes. I went from hating it to loving it. And I don't think there's an in between.

You can see more pics in my bro's "Post a Picture"/photobucket in the Instruments and Equipment section under "New Retro Electric Build".

I'll get some sound clips up after I get more accustomed to the low C string. Can't wait to rock the SAW group!

Which DiMarzio's are those? They make several models with the old rail configuration anymore but I hear the Air Norton S DP 180s are the most balanced for E-Mando. BTW I never cared much for any of the Vox Guitars of days gone by but that one looks cool as an E-Mando. I have a photobucket account but was unable to find the pictures so how about a link?

The DiMarzio's are a DP186 at the neck and DP188 at the bridge.

Chris, I just LOVE that shade of white. Arctic? Mary Kay? Alpine?

Parchment white - wanted something to go with the cream pickups. It also starts off looking a bit aged like a retro should!

That's really nice. When I was a kid I had a Domino Californian guitar that looked a lot like your new mando. Best of luck with it.
