Default Leaving Eden. Carolina Chocolate Drops

I was a tad hesitant to put this in the Old Time Section since they mix some new sounds in there too but, I really am enjoying the Carolina Chocolate Drops new record Leaving Eden. I've been a long time fan of the band. I would be happy knowing someone played their arrangement of Snowden's Jig at my funeral (from the last album). The new record has a banjo-cello (I believe) playing along with crickets on Jerr's Negro Jig (wonderful!!!) followed by some jug bandy sounds on the next track Ruby, Are You Mad at Your Man. There's mandolin content on the songs Leaving Eden and Country Girl. The whole thing is fantastic even after a shake up in the line up right after the Grammys last year.

If you're not familiar with them, check them out on Amazon or Nonesuch.

I met up with the band to take some video a few weeks back and they do indeed have a cellist playing with them now. I believe her name is Layla and she is a wonderful addition to the group both musically and vocally!

Saw them here in Burlington last month at the Flynn Theater--they really have improved their sound with the new addition. They really are fun. Their recently deceased mentor is probably smiling at their continuation of his good work. Doug in Vermont

I saw them at MerleFest '08, and I challenge ANYONE to sit still (or even sit at all) while listening to their music, especially live.

The lead singer, Rhiannon Giddens, is a classically trained opera singer. Her voice is, of course, fantastic. There were a couple of great NPR articles on this very unique and talented band. Clearly, I'm a fan....

Downloaded this CD for a bargain price of $5.99 at amazonmp3 today. Rhiannon Giddens' voice is stunning on "Ruby,Are You Mad At Your Man?". Now I need to listen to the rest....

I have all of their albums. I think this one is their best yet.
