Thread: What if there was an electric mandolin camp?

    Default What if there was an electric mandolin camp?

    Looking over the coming summer of camps, and clinics and noticing there really wasn't much for emando folks I thought it might be interesting to pose the question; Not that I can afford at this point anyway, but I sitll was thinking about if there was something for us. If there was an emando clinic who would you like to spend your time and money learing from(4, 5 and 8 string)?

    My short list would be:
    Paul Glasse
    Michael Lampert
    Jason Anick

    Jim Richter had a blues mandolin camp last year. I dont know if he is doing it again. Since he is well-known for playing an electric I wouldn't be surprised if that was part of the goings-on there, nor if he would know of some others to your liking.

    Last year's Richter Camp (which was fantastic, by the way) had a very strong acoustic focus.
    I believe that my JBovier was the only electric to make an appearance (played wonderfully by Jim).
    Jerry, I would add to your list:
    * Jim Richter
    * Don Julin
    * Andrew Hendryx
    * Jeff Bird (though Cowboy Junkies' summer tour would almost certainly preclude his participation)

    We will include a discussion of emandos in this year's camp. Had been between emandos, so wasn't a possibility. Now that I have again found one I like, it will be a point of lecture.

    I wish I had the funds to attend your camp, but I'm still getting used to being retired and on a survivor type income. Just curous who is the makes of the electric mandolin you found?

    Sorry Ed, I meant to say those were all good choices. I"m most familiar with Jim and Andrew's music, but have heard Don's.

    My current stable of electrics include: Eastwood Mandocaster, Harmony Batwing, Godin A8, and Eastwood Mandola. If this event happens this summer, I could bring them all and an old tube amp and we could have an electric mandolin petting zoo.

    We just had one at Wintergrass ... 'twas a gas. How I would get them all out to Indiana I'm not sure.

    Road trip to Indiana! Only if you come with me, Pete.

    I have a friend, Grahame, who's driven from Phoenix to Astoria, Oregon, for the Tenor Guitar Gathering, so I guess Seattle to Bloomington isn't completely nuts. Of course Grahame drives a Jaguar, so road trips are probably more fun for him.

    It would be great to have Alex Gregory along for an emando summit, along with John Kruth and Sam Bush, in addition to folks already named.

    I emailed a query to Symposium organizers and got some interest from Steve Ruffo. If some others, and especially if some names with box-office appeal raise the question we could have a quorum for an emando room (and let's hope it's not after midnight).

    "Box Office Appeal" and "mandolin" are not phrases I've seen together much...

    Too bad we didn't drag Steve upstairs at Wintergrass ... you can show him Pete's photo of my instruments if it helps. Symposium would be a good place for a little emando action, since there are lots of emando owners within driving distance of Santa Cruz. This might finally get me to the Symposium...

    Don't know if Niles (mandocrucian) is still running any sort of group mando camps, this could very well be the sort of thing to tempt him back from his flute. I think he did an emando tutor with Richard Thompson some years ago.
