    Default Longhorn Mandola

I posted these pictures in another part of the forum. Decided to post here too. Retro-60's loosely based on the Danelectro Longhorn Bass. The body is red elm over pine. The neck is maple/walnut/elm/walnut/maple. Scale is 15.75 inches. Stacked humbucker pickup. Now that I am retired I have more time to let my mind drift.

Very nice looking Dave. I'm not familiar with elm from a woodworking perspective. What would you compare it to? Does it have an open grain like ash?

Thank. Yes, elm has an open grain and looks a lot like ash. I used it because I had a piece a friend gave me that was the right size for this project and I figured it was an upgrade from masonite (tha original Danelectros where very cheaply made).

I love it! Please tell me you're going to do hotrod-esque red and orange flames over light blue background?

There's some really nice grain there!

Kewl! I've built 3 longhorn archtops -> http://www.danedetto.com/dd.cfm <- using NOS Coral bodies. I've been wanting to do a mandolin as well but it looks like you beat me to it!

I think I will finish it natural. I thought about using stain to create a blue burst that would still show the grain but I'm not that good with finishes.
