It might also have been "You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had", a great Muddy Water's cover by Helm.
This song is on the album 'Electric Dirt' (the follow-up to Dirt Farmer), and mandolin is the lead instrument.
It's a great tune, with a strong, steady, Blues tremolo held through much of the song, and with killer vocals by Helm.
You can listen to the song here.

Really need some sort of lyric clue, but I'm wondering if it's "Ain't No More Cane"

It might be Levon's version of Deep Elem Blues, Great version of an ol' Dead tune,
He sit's out front on mando, There's a few subtle mando songs he does where the mando is evident but not prevelant. When I Go Away (great tune) or Move Along Train are other possibilities?

"Deep Ellum Blues" predates The Dead by decades, but yeah, OK, could be it. So could a bunch of things. Where's the OP? Could use some feedback, like a lyric snippet, even just two words.
