I got myself an early Christmas present: Monroe Instrumentals, 25 Bill Monroe Favorites by Todd Collins. I'm working on Evening Prayer Blues and it's starting to sound good, at least to me, but I don't have a recording of Monroe playing it and can't find one on iTunes. Anyone know the definitive recording of Big Mon playing this tune? An MP3 would be great but if I have to I'll pop for a whole CD. Thanks!

It was originally released on Monroe's "Master of Bluegrass" LP in '80 or so, a recording that remains unreleased on CD to this day...(Bummer!!).
Cassette copies abound, and home-made CDs taken from cassettes...
I could probably fix you up...

    Hmmmm....
    Definitive versions....

Well, I have a CD of Mike Compton playing the tune for a workshop, and then running the tune down for 20 minutes or so part-by-part...
    That's pretty definitive...

I also have a rare version of Mr. Bill playing it live from a concert in Vancouver, in which he introduces the tune by telling the story of how he and Gibson had recently settled their differences, and how good it was to get his mandolin back from the repair shop with a new peghead repair, etc....
    Pretty cool...

Other versions include one on a Richard Greene CD, with Buell Neidlinger, Butch Baldessari, David Grier and others...
    Nice take on the tune...

There are also nice live duo versions by David Grier and Mike Compton that are outstanding and worth seeking out...

Oh, and Monroe didn't write it...
It's a Deford Bailey tune, although I have the original recording and you wouldn't recognize it when compared to Monroe's version...

Monroe played it at Deford's funeral...

Bibey knocks it out pretty good on his solo release.

    Okay...
I have just put up a live version of this, with Bill telling about the number in his intro to it. Click on over to Evening for a little bit of Bill's interpretation of the tune.
I don't remember from which show I clipped this from, unfortunately.

Evan, classic Mr. Bill stuff. Man, I could listen to him make that mandolin talk all day and night. To me, noone had the touch that Mr. Bill had with a mandolin. Thanks for sharing that.

"I don't remember from which show I clipped this from, unfortunately."

That's from The Soft Rock Cafe in Vancouver B.C., 11/3/80....

If anyone has any other live version of Bill playing "EPB", I'd sure love to hear it...

So far, this is the only one I've been able to unearth...

Here's Mike Compton and David Long doing Evening Prayer Blues. This is from a house concert in Madison WI (thank you Bluegrassbox.com... and of course Mike and David too).

Believe it or not, Deford's is even more understated than that....

    Hey All,

Dasspunk - I've been listening to some of the songs from Bluegrass in a box (or whatever it is )on your site. As an aspiring harp (harmonica) player I didn't think anybody could do Sittin on Top O the world as well as my favorite harp player Sonny Terry and his accomplished sidekick Brownie McGhee . Man I never thought the mando could sound so soulful but that song was very impressive - to me anyway. Good choice!

    Take Care! -Ed-

Check out new CD by JP Cormier- X8, A Mandolin Collection. JP does a fine job on Evening Prayer Blues as well as other Bluegrass and Celtic tunes.

It appears that the alternate title of the tune is "Montgomery Belle" as performed by Aubry Haynie on the album "Doin My Time." Could it be the original title? Stellar version by the way.

Supposedly the tune 'EPB' was written by DeFord Bailey. Who knows where he heard the tune, if it wasn't in fact an original.

Steve G,, neat idea, I play Montgomery Bell and didn't notice until you mentioned it that Evening Prayer is in there. Does anybody know the "rest of the story"?

And on Frank Wakefield's great (mostly) instrumental album "That was Now, This Is Then" it's called "Roane County Coal Train" but for sure it's "EPB." When Frank was asked about the name, I believe he said that the producer of the album named it that.
