Default Gibson 'fake' of the day!

    Here's a sight for sore eyes...ouch! A Gibson 'fake' currently at www.Carmelmusic.com

early Gilchrist exact Loar copy patterned off the Kenny Snow Loar. Besides the standard label there is a second label which reads: “Built for Ken Snow and patterned after Gibson mandolin F-5 April 12, 1923 serial no. 72859”.

Grisman once owned the real one..dunno if Steve originally did this for him or not, but Dexter knows ..great conversation piece over a Starbucks..

    He, he, he...

This thread had to happen sooner or later after the recent discussions about why inlay "The Gibson" into a headstock. He, he, he... Nice.

I never played a Gilchrist that I didnīt like. I like the newer ones (starting at around 2000) best though. I played an early one that had "The Gilchrist" inlaid in the headstock. It looked classy and it sounded swell. My mando sounded as good I think.

I'm excited for this thread. And that Gil/Gib is awesome! I would consider it if I were looking for a Gil priced mandolin. They should just let some people build these to give Gibson a good name. Cuz that one is gorgeous!

Beautiful mandolin -- what happened to the fb extension? -- was the Loar it was copied from also modified?

BTW I do not think Gibson is in need of anyone to build their mandolins or keep up their name -- I would say that they have those matters well in hand these days -- when they have wood that is.

i assume it's a dead copy of Snow's original, built for him per the description. Don't know if it's changed hands over time or not, but surely a nice fake.

Dexter (Carmel Music) was Gilchrist's sole U.S. distributor for a number of years...he's Grisman's booking agent, also....so, i dunno the story and if there's any connection to all of it, but suspect maybe so.
