Good take on this chestnut.
Good take on this chestnut.
Whodat? i liked what the fiddler did on the A part repeat. The mandoist seems to have mastered Frank's tune, but didn't seem to add anything original to it.

Nice job, enjoyed that.
Thanks guys! Good job digging this up: It's nearly impossible to find.
I am a proud member of this band: Rocks and Ivy, from Belgium and the Netherlands. This is from a live show in Kopenhagen for one of the finest bluegrass audiences in Europe. It was a long long drive through heavy snow.
I like to play this tune cleanly on mandolin and not step out; paying homage to three great bluegrass mandolin highlights: the Red Allen album, the Jimmy Gaudreau album and Jack Tottle's book.
I love this tune for its neat melodic primes and chord structure.
That's David Buyle on fiddle, Gerd van Loock on banjo, Yves Aerts on guitar and Jef van Gool on bass.
Nice playing and nice video too. Must have been a good concert to be at.
Regards
Yes, good, direct rhythm, nothing fluffy. This tune is so regular that it allows for many ways - straight, wild, funky, bright. And if you listen to the many recorded versions, they all put their stamp on it: Gaudreau, Legere, Dawg, Peters, Brock, et al.
Wake recorded it in 1953, sixty some-odd years ago. Crazy.
Thanks, Jeroen! I appreciated the straight-ahead handling of NCR! I believe by respecting the melody, and not feeling the need to "put your own stamp on it" you create a solid tribute to the composer. If you love the melody, play the melody!
Jeroen, nice to see you and Rocks/Ivy immortalized on the Café. And as usual really nice picking and you let your nice Flatbush speak for itself. As you say, bring out the melody, it's Wakefield at his most idiosyncratic.

MAYBE THIS? SOME OF MY BUDDIES I GETTA PICK WITH HOME IN inDIANA!

Wow, I never saw Rocks & Ivy playing this tune. Nice clean playing Jeroen!
I made recording this weekend and found this old thread... I'm not surprised that that Dutch-Belgian band plays this tune so well. I happen to know these guys and they're all incredible musicians. The same to your upload Markelberry, you and your band did an amazing performance.
Consider myself a beginner I made a homemix..
Alan: Good band and good clean mandolin breaks. Mandolin sounds great how about some information? Looks like you guys are having fun that day.
60 years, wow. Frank lives in my town and gave me my first ever lesson on mandolin when I was 14. I managed to catch him sitting in and playing New Camptown Races with Claire Lynch's band 2 weeks ago... seemed like he was in pretty good health and it was great to see him again. Here is a video I found from that night
Frank's got a CD release show in town Nov 23rd with a few of my friends backing him up... I'd love to see it, but unfortunately my band unknowingly scheduled our own CD Release show the same night!
- 2004 Macica A
- 1952 Selmer Centered Tone
- Eastwood electric mandola
(and lots more)
How cool. He still has it. Thanks for posting. Such a classic tune.
One of the best versions I've heard is on a Bob Harris record, with Vic D'Amico and Barry Mitterhoff doing a lovely twin.
The version Frank did with Red Allen and the Kentuckians on Folkways (with Bill Keith on banjo) was recorded sometime between 1962 and 1964 (when the album was released). The liner notes indicate that Bill Keith played with Red Allen and Frank Wakefield in 1962, and after that joined Bill Monroe's band, so maybe the recording was done in 1962 and released in 1964. Dave Grisman would maybe remember when the session was as he was present, and Frank should know the actual year it was recorded.
Here's a video of me playing New Camptown Races with the Del McCoury Band at a show back in 2007.

And here's another video of New Camptown Races from a show I did back in 2011 with The Hickory Project and special guest Chris Leske on banjo. Hickory Project members - Anthony Hannigan on guitar, Dave Cavage on banjo, Jeff Wisor on fiddle and Steve Belcher on bass. From show at The Parting Glass in Saratoga Springs, NY on April 30, 2011.

While I'm at it here's another video when I did a guest appearance with Peter Rowan and the Tony Rice Unit to play "New Camptown Races" when they played at The Egg Albany NY on April 6, 2008. Tony Rice and Peter Rowan on guitars, Frank Wakefield and Rickie Simpkins on mandolins, and Mike Bub on bass.
