Wyane Fugate has a book out and he has exercises in there he contributes to Mike Marshall. -real fingerbusters.
Also stick ping-pong balls between your fingers (so I've heard)

I carry a miniature football in the truck that I "fret" and
stretch as far as possible. I did this in traffic on the way
to work about 15 minutes a day for several months. I wanted
to build strenght in my left hand but didn't have time for
long sessions on the manalin. Dang if it didn't increase my
left hand stretch about an inch longer than what I can do
with my right. I'm also thinking about responding to an email
I got selling a pill that "increases your length". They are
    talking about fingers, right?

Radim Zenkl is the Arnold S. of the mandolin. He looks like an athlete and recommends getting rubber gloves one size too small (so they are tight), cutting off the fingers and running thru scale exercises with them one. When you take them off you feel like superman (or Sam Bush). Torture is fun.... when you stop.
