Default today is the birthday of Jethro Burns

Do you have your copy of "Playing it Straight" and "It Ain't Necessarily Square"?

Can you play the solos off of those records?

    How about a chord melody?

Do you have the books Ken Eidson wrote for Mel Bay?

How about "Swing low, Sweet Mandolin" and "Bye, Bye Blues"? "Back to Back"?

then there's the 39 or so Homer and Jethro records....

Let's all pay tribute by listening to the Legend again today, or maybe trying to play
chords that have 6ths, or 9ths, or flatted fifths..

It is amazing to contemplate that Jethro would have been 91 today, and all he contributed to the art of mandolin playing. I still like Johnny Gimble's description best: "That Jethro, he's the best of the best, isn't he?"

Don, something you said in a thread not to long ago caused me to look up Jethro's version of America the Beautiful in his Mel Bay book with Ken Eidson. Love his chord arrangements. I learned it and now I'm learning Grandfather's Clock.

    Thank you, Jethro.

Happy B'Day to Jethro! A never-ending source of inspiration and joy. There's so much fun in Jethro's playing. I may never achieve his sense of melody and harmony but I'd really like to capture some of his playfulness.

    Jethro, Happy Birthday!
You inspired me to try and learn "There Will Never Be Another You," and doing so taught me a handful of voicings I needed to learn.
Don, how lucky you were to have played w/ him all those years. Thanks for helping to keep his music alive.

I'll get right to work on that.
Happy Birthday, Jethro. I think about you every day. (Working thru the book.)

Happy birthday Jethro, whereever you are. And thanks to Don S and David G for facilitating the 2 Jethro CD's on Acoustic Disc. See you next summer in Long Grove Donnie...or sooner I hope.

I got the Jethro book last week and have been having a ball playing some of the tunes.

I missed the birthday...but here's to the 'Great One" I feel privileged to have met Jethro and to have seen him perform several times! And thanks to Donnie for carrying the torch, but he'll be the first to tell you, there was only one Jethro Burns.

A great musical moment for me was seeing Jackie Washington playing an acoustic stage at Mariposa. Jethro was on next and he showed up early and was watching Jackie. He couldn't resist getting up and playing along. Two of my musical heroes on stage together for the first (and only?) time. We lost Jackie in 2009. He was one year older than Jethro.
