    Default Muleskinner....

Whilst most of you will know of it, some of the youngsters may not.

Richard Greene, Bill Keith, David Grisman, Clarence White, Peter Rowan, John Kahn and John Querin.

I found it in Nashville at Ernest Tubbs. It stays in my cd player in my truck for weeks at a time.

Oh yah, know it and love it. What some may not know is that Roland White played mandola on the descending opening roll to Opus 57 in Gm!

And there is also a video of Muleskinner out there, with a few extra tunes that didn't make it onto the 'record'....

I love their version of "Dark Hollow." If memory serves, I believe they were just a group of friends who threw together a band for a local TV show because Bill Monroe couldn't make the gig.

Actually better than "friends thrown together"... as I understand the story they were to open for Bill Monroe on a TV show (in California, maybe Bakersfield?). Bill's bus broke down on the way there, and the producer told Muleskinner to keep on playing!
You can also find a CD of the tunes from the TV show - I have that but not the DVD.
Bill Keith is a local who occasionally shows up at our bluegrass jams... I got lucky and had him sign one of my Muleskinner CD's ;-)

Lucky you. I used to hit a pickin party on Staten Island that Bill would regularly show up at. That was a thrill, to pick some tunes and munch party food with him.

I bought the cd solely on name recognition some 5 or 6 years ago. Wrestled the #&%$ shrink wrap off the case as soon as I got back in the car and popped it in the player as I tried to pull out into traffic. In retrospect I was obviously and utterly unprepared; Clarence's Tele (Muleskinner Blues) just about tore off the top of my head.

Their super-sonic version of Soldiers Joy always leaves my jaw hanging! :-)

Once you've listened to Mule Skinner Blues until your ears bleed, go find Jesus is Just Alright and Eight Miles High from The Byrds "Live at Royal Albert Hall, 1971" for some more of that tasty 70's Clarence goodness. No Pete Rowan on that one, though.
