just found out about these today, or at least what they were called. does anyone use a guitar slide with their e-mando? would that work? or is that one of those things that just isn't done?

There shouldn't be any reason why you can't, so go for it -- although if you are looking to buy another instrument because you want to play slide on it, you might want to consider getting an eguitar instead, so you have more strings, range, and open tuning options to work with.
But then again, Sam Bush plays slide on his 4-string Reso to great effect on this song...
...and this guy is totally grooving on slide emando.

I play slide on an e-mando and also on an 8 string acoustic in standard tuning, I believe Mr. Bush uses ADAD tuning on his national and mandocaster. Both ways work, whatever trips your trigger.

I use one on a five string plugged directly into a blues jr for certain songs. I'm not sure it's common but I did it out of necessity. The song called for slide and the drummer asked if I could use 'that little glass thing' on the e-mando. It works just fine on the CGD and A string. The 'e' string can be a bit piercing to my ear.
i have messed with a slide but found that the short scale require`s a more subtle touch for intricate dobro style melody . but in a AEAE tuning you could get some interesting bluesy stuff going. have not tried it on my 5 string just an acoustic 8
Check out Steve James book: ROOTS & BLUES MANDOLIN pg.41. He has come up with an open G tuning for playing slide on 8 string mando, but it requires some string changes. The tuning is: gG Dg Bd dd. Reference his book for string order & gauges.
Older thread-
I played slide on my 18.4" scale octave/baritone for some tunes with my old band. I never really cared for slide on the 14.5" scale standard though. Check out "Minstrel" below for an example.

Just thinking mechanics, slide guitars benefit from High action,
fingering the notes benefits from Low action.

Ry Cooder has been using slide on mandolin and mando-guitar (short scale 12 string) for years and years...and always sounds great. Lots of youtube clips.
There`s a sound clip in the CBOM section - Blues on an octave mandola.
Within a week of getting his new doubleneck, Eli sent me this clip :-)
