- what are your favorite 2-3 CD's of Christmas music- mando of course, but acoustic in general. Classical included.
- what else is going on your Christmas list- books, etc

Well, here's a list of ones that I really like:
Jacqueline Schwab, Down Came An Angel
Bonnie Rideout, A Scottish Christmas
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Jingle All The Way
Toronto Consort, The Little Barley-corne
Robert Shaw Chamber Singers, Songs of Angels

Not really mando in each of these (Jacqueline Schwab is purely piano--but Andy Statman is on the Flecktones album playing mando), but I tend to like these few a lot. I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Rhonda Vincent's Christmas CD I'm hooked on right now, as well as the Christmas Grass volumes 1 & 2. That cures my bluegrass fix. Besides that, I've got a Bing Crosby CD I've always pulled out every year. His "White Christmas" is my all time favorite Christmas song.
Always puts me in a peaceful Christmas mood.

On my Christmas list this year is pretty much all mandolin requests - extra set of strings, DVDs and instructional books, money for a strap, and then odds and ends stuff not related to the mando.

I always look forward this thread each year. The folks here have turned me on to a bunch of great mando holiday recordings over the years. Here are a few that I highly recommend:

The Mair-Davis Duo: "The Sounding Joy" (outstanding recording of lesser known Christmas carols by a great classical mandolinist and guitarist)

Butch Baldassari: "Evergreen"

David Grisman: "Acoustic Christmas" (one of my favorite recordings, holiday or not)

John Doan: "Wrapped in White" (an interesting recording featuring harp guitar and a variety of early 20th century instruments including mando)

Rounder's: "Oh Christmas Tree" compilation

Mike, Penny and Peggy Seeger: "American Folks Songs for Christmas" (not really any mando but a very nice double disc of American Christmas songs, most of which are Appalachian and were unknown to me)

That's more than three...but maybe it adds to your list.

How the heck could I forget Capitol Records' Christmas on the Range? I never did experience the 50s, but there's something about old honky-tonk/country on Christmas morning that makes the day more fun.

These are a few of my favorite Christmas CDs:

I lean toward the old stuff whcih my parents played like Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Bing, etc., but I like Mannheim Steamroller and I saw them live in Milwaukee a few years ago.

Came across this 4-CD box set: Various Artists - Midwinter: A Celebration of the Folk Music & Tradition of Christmas & the Turning of the Year. Has 156 page book too.

Here's another vote for NME - Gifts. My wife bought it for me a few years ago and i never get tired of it. i have a second CD called "Acoustic Christmas," it's put out by Regency and numbered V20023. No names i recognize from anywhere else but it's surprisingly good. My favorite cut is #7, Here We Come A-Caroling; it's got this great guitar riff intro that makes repeat appearances throughout the tune.
