Thread: 3 Favorite Mandolin CDs (not by Bill, David, Ricky, Sam & Chris)

Lots of thanks to people who've replied in the past. I like to bump this once a year to get the latest scoop on performers I'm not familiar with. Since its the third year and I've learned lots more about mandolin music, let's also skip anything that's not relatively new or that would be obvious to someone having familiarity with mandolin players (e.g., Andy Statman, Sierra Hull, John Reischman, Mike Marshall, Jethro Burns, Tiny Moore, Frank Wakefield, Butch Baldassari, Tony Williamson, and Matt Flinner). I know there are some gems out there from past posts.

Hadn't seen this thread before. Perhaps not my 'favorite' non-BDRSC CDs - always hard to choose favorites - but ones I feel are worthy of inclusion in the inner circle:
    Reischman's Walk Along John
    Walsh's Sweet Loam
    Steffey's New Primitive

And as far as I'm concerned, the exclusion list should include Reischman. He's earned a seat at that table...
"Well, I don't know much about bands but I do know you can't make a living selling big trombones, no sir. Mandolin picks, perhaps..."

As the thrust of this thread is predominantly on the newer/younger cats, I will add Matt Witler and David Benedict - both Boston-based players and the fellow in Special Consensus (forget his name, but took over the mandolin chair from Rick Farris, who switched to guitar). These guys are hot, musical, young and hungry.

Bobby Osborne, Me and my mandolin is a great album. Also the Rick Allred solo mandolin lp. The album cover looked like it was made from cardboard with a picture glued to it. I have a taped copy; wish I still had the album.

Gene Johnson playing his feb,18th 24 Loar "first# in first batch" with Cliff Waldron and new shades of grass, His II Generation stuff with Adcock and if ya can find the bootlegs his stuff with JD Crowe and New South with Kieth Whitley. If ya can't find that his live at Carnegie Hall with David Bromberg, I believe it says live in NYC but its Carnegie Hall.
Some serious nasty playing with not your normal Loar sound!!!!

I know this is an older post but THANK YOU FOR BUMPING IT UP! I really enjoyed checking out this list and it turned me on to a few albums I wasn't aware of!

    My Favorites. (In no order)

Matt Flinner Trio. (All three albums, but if I HAD to pick...I dunno, Winter Harvest)
Peter Rowan- (Bluegrass Band- Legacy Album) AND Peter Rowan Tony Rice Quintet.
Mandolin Chronicles- Alan Bibey Wayne Benson
    Adam Steffey- New Primitive
I also love Mandolin Orange...but it's not super flashy stuff, just great musicianship/writing.

Some interesting choices here. Thanks for updating.

Will Patton - String Theory, but they are all good.
John Reischman - North of the Border or Travelers
Emory Lester - At Dusk or any of the discs with Mark Johnson
Bonus choice - Don Stiernberg. By George, but they are all good.

Nick Dumas is the fellow in Special C. I took a few weeks or months of lessons from him until he came back from IBMA and announced he was running away to Tennessee and to tour the world. Amazing player, and probably great on fiddle and guitar too but i never heard him play those (but he's not too good at self-promotion and not enough people know who he is).

Hm, what exactly is a mandolin album? E.g., Nordic has released three beautiful CD's and on two of them there's (IIRC) a mandolin on every track, but none of the albums is mandolin centered (or cello centered or nyckelharpa centered for that matter), so I suppose they don't count. Here's what I've picked for today - tomorrow I may pick a different set:

Hamilton de Holanda: O Baile do Almeidinha

Butch Baldassari & John Carlini: Reflections

Mike Marshall Quintet: Tasting the Wine Country (featuring Paul McCandless on double reeds and soprano saxophone, and Philip Aaberg on piano)

It's interesting to see the variety of music/cds people are listening to. Here are some I like a lot:
"Bass & Mandolin: Onward" - Brian Oberlin & Josh Feinberg (I love the combination of the bass & mando)
"Segunda Vez-Second Time" - Mike Marshall & Choro Famoso (great notes w.the cd!)
"Tractor" - Don Julin (funny tunes)
"Between Worlds" - Avi Avital - a really good classical player who brings together a group of fine musicians
...like someone else, I am a fan of Will Patton
