I just got one of their albums based on the recommendations here on MC [a whisky kiss] and like it a lot.

Based on that experience, I'm awaiting a Matt Flinner disc and another Reischman CD I ordered from the recommendations here. I'll be coming back to this thread when the budget allows again, too.

I think I need to make an unlikely addition here: The Lovell Sisters Time to Grow, or any of the new Larkin Poe EPs released this year (they are named after the seasons). The more I listen to Rebecca Lovell's playing, the more she becomes one of my favorite mandolinists. Technically she's outstanding, and there is also a strong rock/blues feel to her playing and I really like that. Plus, IMO, her Duff sounds outrageously good on just about everything....Hard to not be impressed.

Ohhh yeah....how 'bout Luke Plumb's solo mandolin album--A Splendid Notion--to add to the non-bluegrass genres here. While we're at it add anything from Shooglenifty (the band Luke Plumb plays with).

Good one Rob -- what an exceptionally well performed and enjoyable CD, just mandolin and percussion.

Also, a different genre, but a similar concept is Jimmy Ryan's Mandolin: just vocals backed up by Jimmy's acoustic mandolin -- also great stuff.

Jethro Tull - Mandolin Tracks Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 - two 75 minute discs compiled from 20+ Tull albums. Mandolins played by Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Dave Pegg. Probably the best use of mandolin (as a mandolin) in rock music over the years.

Ry Cooder - Mandolin Tracks Compilation almost 80 minutes of Cooder playing mandolin, including "Going To Brownsville", "Billy The Kid", "Boomer's Story", "Bourgeois Blues", "Hey Porter", "Down In Mississippi", "Ax Sweet Mama" and others

Then you tell us...

Of course, these discs don't/won't exist unless you mak 'em yersef by extracting the tracks from your record libray. (But as the blues song goes..."But I've Got Mine")

Now that's just mean!

I'll second A Whisky Kiss; Iain Macleod and his 10-string Sobell are featured prominently on this recording, and it's my favorite Shooglenifty disc (although I love them all).

Well done the Mandocrucian, i was wondering if someone was going to add some variety to the mandolin, bring it beyond the BG/OT vortex.

Don't get me wrong folks, i do appreciate all the suggestions and reccomendations being made here, and i will when time and pocket allow invest, but, i also think that variety is the spice and all that, and i'm glad to see Andy irvine, Luke Plumb and Patrick Vaillant getting mentions, so to further that...

I tried to listen to samples of the recommended CDs and they were all great. So far I picked up a few of the recommended CDs. I’d like to pass on my recommendations for the following CDs which I never would have found had I not posted:
• Tony Williamsom - Sessions at McBane Mill
• Sam Bartlett's Evil Diane
• John Reischman - North of the Border
Going back to my original list, I highly recommend Butch Baldassari, John Reischman & Robin Bullock – Travellers to those of you haven’t heard it.

Here are two cds I like a lot:
"Coming down fr. Red Lodge," by Peter Ostroushko -- He has a bunch of really nice cds. (Also, if you ever get a chance to hear/see him in person, do that.)
"Between Worlds," a new classical cd by Avi Avital. What I like about the cd is the variety of musicians and instruments on the cd along with Avi's mandolin.
