    Default Weber Big Sky

I played one at Gryphon a couple of weeks ago, and it sounded as good as it looked. No bells and whistles, but a nice clean tone and a very responsive chop. However, I can't find any info about the model on the Weber website. Is it a discontinued model? I'm guessing that it was between the Fern and the Yellowstone, but I really have no idea.

Just curious, since it's out of my price range --- unless Gryphon starts a 2/3-off mandolin sale.

I think the Big Sky was about even with the Fern, with different options.

When I was picking out the woods for my new Yellowstone I asked Bruce about the Big Sky, he said that they were discontinuing it and making improvements to the Yellowstone. So now it will be replacing the Big Sky.

I just looked at that Big Sky and it looks just like the new Yellowstones. And that is cheaper than a new Yellowstone.

Thanks, gents. I've never played a Fern, so I wasn't sure if the BS was up that high in the Weber tree.

I'm guessing that the price reflects that it officially is "shopworn." To me, the only thing that seemed at all shopworn about it was the lower two strings. If only the price was a lot more shopworn...

I played that Big Sky today over at Gryphon and it is one lovely mandolin - I couldn't put it down!

    Marcus,

Weber has trimmed their offerings and the Big Sky wasn't one of the nameplates they retained. They are usually very beautifully finished in a darker color format (as compared to Yellowstones, Ferns, etc) and like every maker's mandolins, I'm sure there are good ones and great ones. The base nameplate really doesn't have much meaning today with regard to a Weber, since you can basically start at any level and add options until MAS is fully satisfied. (-; Their new custom build link literally lets you build the mandolin of your dreams!

I'm supprised that Big Sky wasn't retained. I always liked that name.....especially a mando made in Montana.
