No one's mentioned it yet, but my iPod Touch 4g works perfectly for practice recording purposes. Easy to use with the built in mic and either Voice memo app, or the free Blue FiRe recording app.

Note: No monthly charge with the iPod Touch!
The way I look at it - I own an iPhone anyway and I pay for it every month through my business and get great utility out of it. The music related stuff is all essentially free and works really really well. You can do quick recording with the built in mic and recorder. But you can also do four track recording with an inexpensive app. But, keep in mind that since I purchased my iphone I have sold my car gps, my four track recorder, my ipod and my small handheld recorder making more than twice the cost of the iphone up. My iphone does all that quite well.
