Any suggestions on what type/brand strings I should use on my Gibson F9? I play bluegrass gospel style. I had one suggest the Elixer extended life.

I have a Gibson F-9 and play Bluegrass Gospel! I use the Gibson Bill Monroe signature bronze wounds (.011, .015, .026, .041). Sound great on there for chopping, soloing or whatever!
wow, thanks for the quick response! Now if only these strings could make me to play like Bill Monroe.......
I'm up at this time because I'm a breadman and getting ready to leave for work. Where do you live and where do you play?
Ask a hundred people and get a hundred different answers! .....but you won't go far wrong with a set d'Addario J74s
Hmm. Vacuum pack, so theyre not going to rust in storage, so you can buy a dozen sets
and the last would be as fresh as the first pack you open..
No need for the DIY seal-a-meal gear to do the same thing..
They sell the SB Monel packed like that too?

yep.
just groove, baby!
I still need your string labels!
I'll second the J74 strings, they have great tone and they don't cost to much.

I use J74s on everything except my bowlbacks, where I go to very light strings.
Lotta people use J-74's as I do too. Try J-75's too for a different chop and sound as they are a tiny bit heavier.
I didn't like coated strings because well they sound ...coated ... to me! LOL!
There are a zillion kind of strings out there don't be afraid to try them out!
Note the 11,15,26, 40 string gages , to keep the thicknesses the same..
try different brands , and see what You like..

I like the EXP-74s. Yes they're coated. Not sure that they last that much longer, 'cause I change my strings about twice per year no matter what. I just like the feel under the fretting fingers and the feel under the pick.

Hey Mick ! - With your past 'Beatles' credentials you should be an Eggman - then you could lay around a lot. ( i can hear the groans from here !),

Lebeda F-5 "Special".

Tokai - 'Tele-alike'.
Ellis DeLuxe "A" style.
I've used J74's for years and they never have let me down. But, the comments about multiple choices are correct; try some and see what you like best or what friends say sound best.

Just thought one variable made constant, then the other variant,
characteristics between brands would have a base line..
most folks want loud and you can lay into an 11-40 set.
I have Monels on my f hole mandos, lighter 10-36 P Bronze on the 21 A. play it more lightly..
silk and steel on the 22 A4.

Ditto on the J74s - I try others but keep coming back to them.
I just got a Crestwood mandolin and for the setup I used the J74s. It is louder now and well, the tech set it up perfectly!
I use the Elixir nanoweb 11-40's on my fern. They last quite a long time and have great playability. I'm thinking about trying the Monel strings from Gibson. I have a friend that plays the silk and steel on his Gibson F9 and they sound great. I don't care too much to change strings often and I can go a couple months with the elixirs playing at least 1 to 2 hours per day.
I use GHS Phosphor Bronze on everything. Love 'em.

My favorites have kind of evolved. First it was D'Addario J74s, then J75s then Gibson Bill Monroes, then FireWires, then GHS Silk & Bronze. I have used the S&B's for more than two years now. I would still play the others but my favorites from brand new to almost a year old are the S&B's.
