Default Rib cover on Osborne Brothers mandolin?

    Hi,

Last night I watched the DVD of "Bluegrass: Country Soul". On the Osborne Brothers's sections, it looks like he has some sort of white cover over the mandolin's ribs. Its not totally clear, but in some shots it looks like there may be some tabs extending on the top. I've never seen any other mandolins with anything like this. Is it some sort of rib cover or protector or decoration? Or is it just a strip of paper taped to the top for a tune list or lyrics?

Here are some YouTube clips to see what I'm talking about:

    Thanks,

    Paul

Looks like a set list taped on, to me.

It's a set list. We all did that years ago. It was a heck of a lot easier to do it on a guitar though. One bass player I know has a clipboard clip screwed to the side of his bass so he doesn't have to tape it.

I could be wrong and I have been before but it looks to me like there's type written text on this blow up. The quality of the video isn't great either way so I might be seeing a shadow.

Also in those videos, the white only goes from halfway up the lower bout to the bottom of the scroll. Unless it's a piece of something to protect the top of the rim, I'd have to say it's a tune list or some other memory aid.

Okay, it's definitely paper, because you can clearly see the scotch tape holding it down in the Ruby video, right after Bobby's real long note at around :55:

Tom (f5loar) mentioned in another thread that it might be the words to a new song or songs, I can accept that was well. Same concept.

That is exactly right. I emailed Bobby and he wrote back that it was the lyrics to new songs he had not yet memorized.

Love this video! Lots of interesting things: the use of amps, Bobby's fretboard (I assume that wasn't stock gibson) for another.
