There sure is a mandolin riff, kind of drives the chorus. There's been plenty of discussion about this over at this thread. Best to read through the earlier posts before the thread veers (not that there isn't some fun stuff later); the song/video is at post #6. I think it's pretty straightforward, nothing fancy but solid.

I'm pretty sure it's Darrell Scott playing mandolin. It is a great solo that closes the song.
Yep, it's Darrell Scott. Just saw him on Jimmy Fallon the other night w/Plant and they did Angel Dance. Good band with Byron House, Patti Griffin, Buddy Miller, and Darrell.
BTW, looked like Darrell's mando was capoes on 3rd fret. Patti and Buddy were also capoed.

...I wonder how the old folks are at home...
Hi everyone...I have been trying to find the tabs for mandolin for this song but I haven't been too successful. Recently, a new video has been released that shows Darrell's playing. I am trying to figure it out but I am very new to playing mandolin, only 4+ months and I so want to learn it because I really love the song. Can anyone help me with it? You can view the video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv6h8Q3p6FA
That's originally a Los Lobos song, you might try that angle if you're looking for tabs.
Sorry I can't help, I'm very much a newbie myself, and I'm totally lost when a capo is involved...
But...Thanks very much for posting!
What a great band, and what a wonderful performance! And what about the mix, and the sound quality?!...With the mandolin right out there...Pretty incredible!
That's a great video!
I do hope you get an answer, I'd LOVE to work on this tune.

BTW & FWIW, Robert Plant is scheduled to be on Letterman Friday night. Probably going to do a different song this time around, but still worth watching, I reckon.

I picked-up the Band of Joy CD today.
Listening now.
Pretty amazing stuff throughout...
It's great that Plant has stayed so relevant and creatively articulate and active.
LOVE Central Two-O-Nine (despite the banjo )...What a great jam song!

Saw live concert footage of Plant doing this yesterday on HDN, with Steve Earle playing mandolin. What a motley crew (visually speaking)! It was like the cover of the first Jethro Tull album (This Was), and they (Tull) were just kidding with the old wino/geezer/bum look.
Original song was on Los Lobos' The Neighborhood album. No mando on the track, but Levon Helm played mando on "Emily".
