Default Late Night Trashy Mandolin Music

From the "This Day in Mandolin History - August 5" thread on the Cafe's RSS News Feed Forum:

August 5, 1890, Lawrence, Kansas newspaper reports "late night trashy mandolin music" being played in the downtown park.

That settles it! If I ever get good enough to record an album of mandolin music it will be called Late Night Trashy Mandolin Music.

Hm. We've been discussing potential mottos for the 2010 CMSA convention. "Late Night Trashy Mandolin Music" has a certain ring to it.

I sure would like to read the rest of that article. Were they singing bawdy songs? Did a riot ensue? Was this the ignominious start to the mandolin craze, spread across the country by ragtime-minded ruffians? Who decided the music was trashy, and how trashy can mandolin music get? (NOT suggesting a contest.) Was this gruesome gathering broken up by The Upright Citizen Brigade wielding banjos? WHA' HAPPEN'???

The entire quote from that piece was something like:

Neighbors near South Park have complained about trashy music being played on mandolins and guitars late into the night, and how it is wished they would give it a rest!

I think they mentioned libations were involved, not sure. Even if it wasn't mentioned in the article, they probably were. This is the same park where the Kansas Picking and Fiddling weekend takes place as do a few other select acoustic string events.

Another quote from the same newspaper from October 10, 1891:

The Riverside Mandolin Club of Lawrence, Kansas played a dance for the Sigma Nu fraternity at the University of Kansas.

A mandolin orchestra for a dance. Having trouble wrapping my brain around that one.

AHA! I rather thought people were objecting to more than the music, and such things as loud, drunken, boorish behavior often bring condemnation. Nice that mandolins got top billing, though!

And if living well is the best revenge, then for musical events to take place there nowadays - perfect!

It is better to have mandolined trashy music, than to not have mandolined at all ...

Well, that's OK. I wouldn't want to dance with a brain wrapped around me.

Our orchestra has lots of polkas and some mazurkas in its library, as well as a waltz or two. Mandolin orchestra music wouldn't work for the kinds of dances kids do nowadays, but dancing was much different in 1891.

Seems to me a mandolin orchestra could have played some delightful dance music at the time - waltz, fox trot, two step, box step - whatever was considered proper and genteel. I haven't read too many reports, but I've never thought of mandolin orchestras as performing only classical music at concerts.

I have played late at night on a trashy mandolin, does that count?

Yeah, but this was a frat party. There were most likely kegs and togas and sorority babes. Hopefully this orchestra's repertoire included Twistin' the Night Away, Shama Lama Ding Dong, Louie Louie and Shout.

In 1890? that would have been a very progressive band!

We bow and observe an important anniversary of an evening that occurred a few blocks from Mandolin Cafe headquarters long ago. Would have been proud to have our music called "trashy."

I suppose it's a typo: I've always been threshing my instruments, not trashing them.

In 1891? More likely it included The Daring Young Man On the Flying Trapeze, After the Ball, perhaps a schottische or two.

Well, I have long since forgotten most of the verses to "Charlotte the Ha____", but I can still play it on a mandolin. If necessary. Only to prove a point, of course.

Another anniversary for this celebrated day in my 'hood. Plans for a beer on the porch tonight and a few late night trashy mandolin tunes steps away from Mandolin Cafe headquarters. I love history.

Hank,I know some of that Charlotte tune. Thanks for that.

Since it mentioned mandolin and guitar playing I would tend toward the obvious, that the guitar players were the real threat and problem.

I might see the neighbors' complaints if it was Yank Rachel's Harmony Batwing on a cold night playing through a Fender Bassman or something like that. While I may hear sweet soulful blues others may find that disturbing.

    Here's to Lawrence,Kansas. Cheers!
