Default Golden Gate F-Model Mandolin Fiberglass Case

Does anybody know this case and will a Michael Kelly case fit in this case?

The MK mandos are a great fit in that particular case. One of our local groups ( http://www.thewintonsbluegrass.com/ ) went on tour with a Dragonfly in one of these cases. The original MK case had been pretty well destroyed after a few years of heavy use.

I would be anxious to use either the Golden Gate or the similar Eastman Fiberglass cases as a flight case (like a $460 Calton or Pegasus case). I'm sure it's a spiffly looking case and would be fine for carry on and take around town, but I wouldn't trust it for baggage handlers and 5 foot drops unless I heard a lot more about them.

I agree with Jamie here.. The Golden Gate version is a little beefier than the Eastman Offering and a nice step up from most wooden cases, but these are not quite there with true flight cases.

Yeah I don't play to fly and check it that's for sure but I think this case for the price will give me more general protection than the case I have now. I can't afford a $460 case and have not been traveling lately.

Regarding touring did they check the mandolin in this case or did they carry it on? Can you carry a mandolin on most planes?

I can't afford $460 for a case either. I have and like my Eastman F shaped fiberglass case in bright yellow. I wouldn't check it for a flight either. I've been able to carry all of my mandolins in shaped cases on board flights (until 2007 which was the last time I flew anywhere other than off the handle).

I will use it in the subway....so I think this case will do me well. Not planning to fly but if I do...hopefully I could carry it on.

    They travel in a motorhome.

You should be able to carry on a Mandolin case. Even if you are not allowed to put it in the overhead, they will normally stick in the plane with the other large carryons.
