Default Regal Tenor in 1929 Western movie

By chance I came across this still (in a book) from the 1929 Fox movie "In Old Arizona". The star, Warren Baxter, is definitely serenading the woman with a Regal tenor. (The headstock shape with the circle on it--in which Regal put its name--is clearly visible in the original.) I suspect the art department painted the top to fancy it up. This early sound movie is apparently available on DVD. Thought people might enjoy seeing it.

I'm wondering what the earliest date for a tenor is. And also earliest known photo of one. This is rare in that it can be positively dated.
