Does anyone remember (hopefully better than I, and with a clip) when a few years back, the Laurel Canyon Ramblers had a national commercial running for one of the mobile phone companies? The band played standing in a circle, filmed from (mostly) inside the circle, looking at the players' instruments as they played.

Debate among friends today whether the instrument playing the music in this ad is a mandolin or perhaps something similar/European.,, thought I'd see what the cafe thinks..
Hereby & forthwith, any instrument with an odd number of strings shall be considered broken. With regard to mix levels, usually the best approach is treating the mandolin the same as a cowbell.

No, I wasn't! That's not the Laurel Canyon Ramblers, anyhow (and how does that Hofner violin bass sound like a bull fiddle)?

Well, glad to know I was wrong! (whew!)

Anyway, to cleanse our minds of that unpleasantrie, there's a Subaru ad featuring mandolin as the major instrument in the background music. I can't find it on Youtube, but you've probably seen it.

No, it's got to do with consumer safety ratings and other such things. Maybe it's only a regional one....

Oh, OK. The sound fidelity on my laptop is not so great, and I couldn't tell for sure what instruments were being used on these.

It took some doing to track this one down via usual methods - mostly because the band's name is not mentioned, and also because there was no useful verbal snippet. I had thought it was Feist - it is very Feistian - but it's Shayna Zaid & The Catch - Morning Sun.

Here's the whole song, and another:

Here's a brand new one featuring Mountain Heart and Aaron with his Daley mandolin.

There's about 6 or 7 more commercials coming. These were filmed in mid-August 2010, and are being shown on TV in middle Tennessee. That's Opry announcer Eddie Stubbs with the introduction.

A Ragu commercial from the early '70s that's been in my head to this day. Never thought to search the intranets for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbjKHOEGWGs

There are at least two commercials for Disney World that feature mandolin. They both have the words "Real Families. Real Memories" in caps at the start. So far my efforts to find them on the interweb have been fruitless. Maybe someone more savvy with this stuff can track them down for us.

Here is an advertising that we made 5-6 years ago for a tourist agency. I play the music in the background.

This might be better classified as "CBOM in a Commercial." Mr. Terry Woods on Bouzouki.

If I call my guitar my "axe," does that mean my mandolin is my hatchet?

That's some catchy stuff there, and a nice use of mando in acoustic pop. I'll have to look out for these folks.

Does anyone remember those annoying lo-budget male enhancement ads that were running about every 15 minutes on cable channels a few years ago? I remember the first time I heard my song "Mr. Natural" on that commercial. It reminded me of that saying " Be careful what you wish for...." The reality is: When you license your music to a publisher, you authorize them to try to make money with your song. Oh well! It is another TV commercial with mandolin music.
Seems mandolins and virility enhancement is a common pairing...

I wasn't able to find it on YT, but I just caught the tailend of a Pillsbury commercial tonight that featured mandolin. I didn't see enough of the commercial to know what product it was pushing, but it closed with the text "Simply Pillsbury".

Yes, I've seen that too, and haven't been able to find it yet eaither. There are a few like that, for whatever reason. The Disney World one, for instance, which may be just a Florida thing. Gotta say, my ear sure perks up whenever I hear them.

Two current commercials with mando content, if not actually heard:

    - Vehix.Com shows a top-down convertible Mustang (for about 0.6 seconds) occupied by four 20-somethings, with a Gibson paddle-head sticking up from the right rear seat passenger.

    - A Keith Urban commercial (here in the NYC area), mostly with Stratocaster, flashes to a half-second of him strumming a flat-top Sobell/Celtic-looking mandola, OM, or maybe bouzouki. At least, it looks bigger than standard mandolin... but hard to tell in the total of 1.017 seconds in the three shots that I've had to study it!
    - Ed
