Default What is that one bluegrass song?

You know what I mean. What is that one song that gets your blood going. Like when you are riding alone in your car and it comes on and you crank the volume to 10+ and sing as loud as you can or if there are people riding with you, you shushh them so you can hear your song. I know most of you probably have a few or maybe a dozen, but try to think of just one that you could put at the top of the list.

For me I am a sucker for Lonesome River Band, the song that sits top of my list ( as least right now ) is Sorry County Blues off of the One Step Forward album. Man I think Ronnie Bowman nails this song, as well as most every song he sings.

My real Bluegrass introduction was via the Deliverance LP we had, no apologies. I listened to it a lot during middle and high school well before I ever saw the film (still want to read the book). Two cuts off of that that I really enjoy are Shuckin the Corn for the fiddle and Farewell Blues for the groove.

It´s either the one I´m picking right now, the one I just played or the one I´m inspired to play next. It´s even the one I might leave out because I have too many on my hand to deal with. I´ve got a project going with a couple of friends. They are (quite) accomplished. It´s fun to play with them. They keep coming with different tunes. It is hard not to get sidetracked.

    Bluegrass is good.

I guess some may say, "that ain't bluegrass," but mine is Skaggs doing Highway 40 Blues. I think his mandolin break and Bela's banjo break make it halfgrass.

Definitly Rocky Top. Whether it's the Flatt & Scruggs version, Dolly Parton's sped up rendition, or Phish's cover, I can't get enough of that song! It's super fun to jam to as well!

Some might fine choices here. If I were to add another, the song Carolina Star off of Tony Rice Picks and Sings Bluegrass is another I love to crank.

This exercise is too hard. Do we really have to pick only one? How about one each from the major styles of bluegrass:

Contemporary Bluegrass: "So Long, So Wrong" - Alison Krauss and Union Station
Gospel Bluegrass: "On the Sea of Life" - Doyle Lawson
Traditional Bluegrass: "Tennessee in 1949" - Larry Sparks

What a record, even the inside comic book is cool. Anna from that LP is a real great tune.

Lonely Man, Lonely Time from a Country Gentlemen show ca. 1980 does it for me.

I will have to go with Laird on Old Home Place, second would be Weathered Gray Stone, third On My Way Back to The Home Place,
and number four Blue Virgina Blues. Sometime the order changes depending on the mood, this is it. It is really hard to select but after forty years you can think about the songs that really touch you, I have some many that I have the BG Gospel songs in a separate category.

I don't know why, but I love Nine Pound Hammer. Other than that, almost any Blue Grass works for me, especially if it is played by the genre's father!

Another great tune from this is Sounds of Goodbye, with nice cascading mandolin tremble from Byron Berline.
