I think Stefan's numbers start off with the year.. but best you mail him a couple pictures and ask. He's easily found at http://www.sobellguitars.com
Many luthiers sign and date underneath the top. You could get a flashlight and mirror and inspect. Im not sure if Sobell does this but just a thought.
His earliest ones have a Turf House label, rather than the later Old School label. The early Turf House instruments don't have any numbers. I talked to Stefan about my large-body Turf House mandolin that was ascribed to the late 1970s by the person I bought it from and he said that that sounded about right, but that he couldn't be absolutely certain.

Mine has the Old School label with "June 1995" and Stefan's signature hand written on it but no serial number. He does answer emails as well.
