Maybe I'll post some pictures of me wearing the French Beret with my new Gibson F-9. However, I wonder if I'll be able to get away with the beret at Beanblossom ...

The best hat in bluegrass music is Mike Compton's "The _______" baseball cap.
Favorite festival hats: brazilian Washburn, opryland mall special , oldtime fiddle contest cowpoke....

I've worn hats since at least the mid-70's. Not caps, but HATS. My favorite is "The Bushman" made by Akubra in Australia (you can order them here: www.davidmorgan.com ) I own at least 10 different hats, one a vintage Stetson originally purchased by my grandfather in the 1930's. The appropriate hat keeps you cool in summer, warm in winter, and dry when it rains. I hate getting my head wet. Wouldn't feel dressed without one.

I'm not a hat guy, but I often wear ballcaps in casual mode -- including mandolin time -- and a handfull of favorites follow:

The absolute finest in bluegrass headware is featured on the cover and inside photo layout of the first album by Country Gazette - A Traitor In Our Midst
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a large, clear jpg of just the cover of the Traitor LP, and nothing at all for the inside jacket photo spread.
Shameless plug: for anyone needing a picking-suitable headcover, these are available over at my Zazzle storefront...

I used to wear a hat when I played mandolin.

Not much mando content but here's the hat of the day. From Ayers Rock in Northern Territory OZ worn in the Philly Burbs, USA after 20+ inches of snow with my Wonka glasses. This is also a good warm weather hat. I can pull down the brim when I flub a note.

Here are my favorite hats for playing mandolin. I think everyone needs one. Gets you better tone and a warm head! .

Here's my current favorite, a generic from a Feed Store out my way...I also wear Bailey hats a lot. Just happened to be on fiddle when this picture was taken, but there's lots of mando content in front of me!
I have a bald dome that always needs protection from the sun and the elements--even inside.
I usually wear a beret or cap of some kind--a cotton Berkeley-hipster snood in sunny California and either a Basque beret or my grandfather's old Donegal cap in colder climes. I also wear a straw hat--cowboy or otherwise--in the hot sun and a ball cap for hiking.
On stage it's usually the cotton snood.
I have to say that I don't much like watching bands wearing ball caps or cowboy hats where the brims cast shadows on their faces, and I really hate that black cowboy hat thing that so many country singers feel compelled to do. Dwight Yoakam is the only one who effectively pulled that off.

There is an everything for a dollar store near here that has a couple of shelves of black bowler hats, I am thinking I might get a stack, just for, you know, just, well, just in case.
I once heard a lighting director gripe that "anyone who showed up with a cowboy hat should bring their own up-lights!"
For gigs with our Celtic-ish trio, I wear a black wool hat with a short brim. I've seen it variously described as a fisherman's cap or a fiddler's cap. It's like a Greek sailor cap without the rope trim.
Here it is, hopefully

noooo way - never got the hat thing. when necessary - to keep warm in winter and avoid sun-stroke in summer - i'll wear one but never anything i'd consider "mah' pickin' hat" ... it would be too much like a costume.
