Last year was my "resonator" Christmas (one squareneck dobro, one brass roundneck tricone), but this year it was a Passernig Deluxe A mandolin. Many thanks to Todd, an MC member, for selling me this fine instrument. Someone should snap up the F model he still has for sale.

At the price I better not lose it.

Let's see...I got a book of Celtic mandolin tunes, Mel Bay's Southern Italian Fiddle and Mandolin Tunes with accompanying CD, and - not mandolin related but REALLY cool - my husband researched and bought me a mountain dulcimer kit, solid cherry, from Folkcraft. He also got me a great book to help me learn to play, and a CD of Appalachian picking tunes.

I can't wait to build it!

    Hi All:

I self-gifted myself a Beansprout Banjo Uke, that will be here sometime in the new year. I guess since I ordered it on the day before Christmas eve that makes it a Christmas gift???

Other than that, we just gave a whack of cash to the Salvation Army, and ate lots of turkey.

So we had a touch of indulgence, and a touch of generosity.

Nothing mando-related. The nearest thing to mando, shape-wise, was a frying pan with separated halves to help me do my egg-and-bacon breakfast "more professionally", as my wife put it. One half has a ribbed surface, the other an even one. I have not figured out yet where I am supposed to put the egg, the bacon, the tomatoes, the potatoes, the black pudding...

But the handle is very short, so at least I am sure I won't need a capo

I got some new clothes to wear between my skin and my mandolin; some sweeties to eat in between playing my mandolin; and some 'finger steel drums' to play when I'm not playing my mandolin.

The wife and me bought ourselves a Vita R4 integrated music player between us to play mandolin music on.

I was so grateful for the stuff I got and I'm always humbled by people's generosity.

Can I wish everyone a Happy New Year!

I got all the Marilynn Mair CDs I didn't already have, including the wonderful new Brazilian recording, Meu Bandolim. I also got a Choro Songbook by Almir Chediak, which has 97 tunes with chords and bass clef harmonies. It looks fantastic. I am going to take it to Copy Corner today and have a spiral binding put on it.

Happy Holidays to all, and best wishes for a happy, healthy new year with plenty of music.

    Simultaneously ambidextrous!

I'm still digging Dan Hicks. So nice to bring one of my favorites back to a conscious level. Also getting a kick seeing the current list of "Recently Added" in my Media Player Library: Blood Oranges - "Lone Green Valley," Blue Rodeo - "Five Days in July," Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks - "Where's the Money?" Puts me in a good mood just seeing that lineup. I don't even want to add any more CDs, not just yet ...

Nothing. We had a quiet Christmas eve with a fire, classical music (Bruch), a lot of snow, and a roast dinner. Best Christmas I've ever had.

I got this ring. My Sweetie (wife) said that if I play a nice mandolin, she wanted the young girls to know that I am already spoken for. I told her we have been married 39 yrs, her comment was, why take a chance. The mando came a little earlier this year.

Excellent! Must look nice. What I have is just the sample when that (or something like it) was up on ebay once upon a time. Nothing better than the real thing.

Same here, as my wife surprised me with a Seattle Mandolin Orchestra shirt and mandolin bumperstickers, one to put on her own car! That, and Marilynn Mair's method book, gave this Christmas lots of mandolin content.

After 60+ years on this planet, I've found that the very best gifts are the ones you buy yourself! I think most will agree that I did OK this year!
Waverleys from StewMac and Custom Buttons from Mike Blohm
The pics aren't the best but you can see in the second one how those buttons dressed up that sorta' plain headstock on my F5-G.
When I opened the package Mike sent I was in awe of the detail! They are worth every penny!

Some nice metal work is very enjoyable to have on your instruments. And you're right, Steve...since I don't really get gifts from others--I enjoy giving them more--the gifts I get myself are things I really want

This year, I came very close to acquiring a tenor sax for my xmas gift. But, I started playing my old alto a couple of weeks ago, and this evening learned the Merry Harrier on flute. So, I think my old horns are going to be what I get this year...
