Hi, I'm new to the cafe. Bought a mandolin this weekend. What are some of the pros and cons to using Murphy Henry's beginning DVD as a way to get started?

I don't know about that particular DVD but those are usually a decent way to start. However, it's been my expierience that private instruction and playing at Jams or with other people are an even better way to improve, even if your just a beginner, most musicians are very helpful and would want to see you improve.
Thanks for the response Clintross.
Hi Baglady welcome to the cafe. Lots of nice friendly people here just waiting to help out a dumb newbie.
Don't no the DVD, but the advice on at cafe will help you move forward.
Hi & welcome - Just so that i could play along with a few tunes, theVERY first thing i did was to buy a book of chords "The Gig Bag Book of Mandolin Chords",& learn the principal 3 chord trick in the Keys of G & C. If you learn the 4 string(moveable) chord shapes in those keys, you can move up & down the fingerboard to play in other keys. This will get you able to strum-along with lots of tunes. That in turn, gets you familiar with the tunes, gets you into learning 'rhythm' & being able to move from one chord shape into another. Along with that,i picked a few simple tunes such as 'Angeline the Baker' & a few Banjo tunes i know,& simply followed the Mike Compton 'hunt & peck' procedure to pick out the tunes. It's a bit hard going at first, but it does teach you 'where to get the sounds' you hear on the fingerboard. You'll get to a point where you'll be able to listen to a tune on a CD & 'see' in your head where the player's playing the notes you're hearing. It may be a way off for you yet, but you'll get there - don't give up !!,

I think the Henry methods would be good, we develop a bit too much dependence on tabs and the Henry material is based on listening and watching.
Thanks for all the advice. Up until this past weekend, I have never even looked closely at a mandolin much less held one. I'm really in the dark. I took up the banjo a few months ago and watching my jam dvds has made me want to learn the mandolin also. I'll be lurking around here to see what I can learn.
