Default Hampton Roads VA. 2009 Mandotasting II

We had one couple of years ago and had a blast. Figured it was time for another.

    What: Mandotasting II 2009
    When: Saturday Sept. 12 from 2pm - 5pm??
Where: Norfolk, VA (PM me for address and directions)

Food and refreshments provided but BYOB
Door prizes (no mandolins sorry! LOL)

Bring all your mandolins you want to show off along with a stand for each (for the group picture) and we will display them and then have a nice jam and everyone can try out different makes and models.

Last time we had Gibson's, Brentrup's, Flatiron, Collins, vintage and new and more show up. We estimated it was about $40K of instruments. You would have to drive a LONG ways from here to find (and play) an assortment like that.

Food, drink, mandolins and jamming ... what more could you ask for???

Here's what showed up at the last one!

Anyone else aware that there are two free concerts later that night as part of Hampton Bay Days - Ricky Skaggs with Kentucky Thunder and Bruce Hornsby followed by Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers?

Wow no I didn't know that was going on. We're doing this early at 2pm so there should be time to get over there to Hampton it's only about a 25 minute ride through the tunnel from here.

I don't care for Hornsby much but I'd like to see Ricky Skaggs maybe I'll check it out later that night thanks!

    Hey Jim,

I'd like to come down there for this. I have a class at VCU until noon, I'm a newbie to the area and not familiar with the drive times. Can I make it down there in time for the party?

I'm thinking maybe, bringing up the lowly A3, 1N and A5-1. Well, maybe a guitar too.

Must coordinate with my overbooking agent.

Yeah you should be able to make it or at least not be very late. Richmond is 1 1/2 hrs drive and VCU is a little past that. You should make it in less than 2 hours if you don't get caught in any tunnel traffic.

If your a little late come on down anyways we'll have a cold one waiting for you! LOL!

cwilson and sgarrity will be there with their guitars so no need to bring one. One less thing for you to carry unless of course you want to show off the guitar then of course bring it!

Hope you can make it F-D!

Hoping I can make it. I have Air Guard drill that weekend, but that does put me in Hampton for Saturday so it is just a matter of being able to cut out early that afternoon. I wasn't sure if I was going to attend the concerts figuring that the crowds would be a bit much, but will decide later. If there, I'll be the guy with the lowly Kentucky 505.

Sounds great! I'll buzz on home after class, load up the mando's, and head on down. I should be able to get there pretty close to the starting time.

Hey everybody remember to bring a stand for each mandolin you have if you have them! I am ordering 4 extra today for strays but don't count on one it might be filled before you get here!

12th is just around the corner. Heard from quite a few out of towners! This is gonna be fun!

On that topic (stands) there is a nice thread here on the cafe with information and opinions galore. As a result, I have now ordered a stand from Elderly and look forward to its arrival (shortly) before the soiree'. Of course, if it's not an evening event, I guess it should be called a matinee'. But it's not in the morning, so I don't know what to call it aside from interesting. I look forward to being there (92+% confident).

I've contacted Jim, but I'll mention that I'm planning to show up, too. Newby that I am and all. With my two mandolins. Bought a low-$ but very workable 3-legged stand just for the occasion. Well, it's really for me and my family at home, but it should work in Norfoik, too.
