    Default Little Beggerman

I got this version from Norman Blake years ago. I am using a oval hole Eastman 504.

Chuck, that was beautiful, haunting. What key are you playing in?

That would be A minor, Barbara.

Yes, I believe Red Haired Boy & Little Beggarman are one and the same, we play it in A, but playing it in A minor is cool!

Yes, Barbara and Mike. This is the way Norman played it along with Tony Rice. However, when Tony took the lead he played in A major.

Actually, in looking at my stuff closer, I see that we play it in A mixolydian. I understand modes, but I'm not a quick with them.

    So, A major is A B C# D E F# G# A
    A minor is A B C D E F G A (same notes as it relative major key of C)
    A mixolydian is A B C# D E F# G A (same notes as the key of D)

I'm VERY short on theory here... the difference in A minor and A mixolydian is the 2 sharps, AND, the chords would be different, right?

    Very Cool!

I used Am, G, and E chords on A & B parts, Barbara. I am not expert on the modes however. I learned it from a recording.

Chuck, the way we play it, in A Mixolydian, the chords are

    A part: A A A D A A G G A A A D A A E A
    B part: G G G D A A G G A A A D A A E A

You would not happen to have a recording you could post, Barbara? I would like to hear the difference.

Hey Chuck, I'm walking out the door right now to go to band practice, but I'll work on it this evening when I get home. I did piddle around with a video this morning, melody only, first in Am then in A mix.... no chords....

Chuck -- The A minor version of "Little Beggarman" (aka "Red Haired Boy") is often called "Gilderoy" (an Anglicized version of a Gaelic name), to differentiate it from the more-commonly-heard A mixolydian version.

I play a version with two verses and choruses in A mix, followed by an A minor verse and chorus, and then ending up back in A mix.

    Ed,

You are correct. I check the Blake/Rice compilation and both titles are listed, but I just thought Blake was played LB in a minor key. Thanks for the explanation

In Ireland it's sometimes done in G mixolydian.

Here's how I play Little Beggarman (note, after recording it, uploading it, and posting it, I realized that the 2nd time through, I only played one B. There should be 2 B's played... it's a problem I have when I play it almost every time!)

    Nice Barbara.

Nicely played, beautiful mandolin, and you are like my wife, you look sexy wearing glasses (and without also...just need to cover all the bases)

Chuck, thanks for the compliments! My glasses are just 'old lady cheaters'... you may notice on my videos sans glasses, that I occasionally squint at the screen to try to see!

I've often used this tune as a demonstration vehicle for application of various ideas and techniques.

There are various harmony parts and inverted melody/harmony parts, and even rhythmic displacements to "Red Haired Boy" in Twin Mandolin Method. There is also a doublestop (melody/harmony above) arrangement of the tune.

In Hot Licks For Hot Picks, there is a crosspicked version of the tune, and a crosspicked harmony. (The sonic effect of playing those those in harmony with two instrument is really something else!) There is also an arrangement of the tune loaded up with highland bagpipe style ornamentation (using hammer-ons, pull-offs, pick glides).

No mandolin content, but here's a fun folk/rock version with harmonica (starts about a third of the way into the clip):

I posted this somewhere else a couple years back. We were going for the Irish aire type of feel - in "D" and super slow.
