    Tim OBrien.

Kym Warner & Tim O'Brien, different styles, both great pickers.

The times I've seen Jody Stecher play, he was always playing an A model with F holes. He's awesome. Going back a ways, Buzz Busby played one as well.

They are definitely limited. The three already mentioned were the first that came to my mind. Since Monroe played an F5, everybody that plays bluegrass wants to play one too. Doyle Lawson has played one at different points in his career. Sam Bush started out on an A5. It's not bluegrass but Paul Glasse plays a Monty Style B, which is an A5. Andrew Collings used to play a Heiden A5 until he got his F5.....

Well, not necessarily a go-to name around here, but Rickie Simpkins played an A style, f hole mando up in New Haven last year when he played with the Tony Rice Unit. It was great to hear him on mando the whole show - terrific playing. Of course, had he played fiddle or banjo, that would have sounded pretty good, too. Having Rob Ickes sit in on that show was a surprise. Check out some photos from the web site for the local promoter, who's doing a great job bringing in some quality shows.

Tony brings the Unit back to New Haven in late March, and looks like Rickie will be fiddling this time around. But, I guess you never know until the band takes the stage.

Rickie is certainly no slouch on the mando. I think he plays a Gibby A5-L, right?

Other than myself of course I'd have to say Ray Legere and that great Nugget of his.

Gibson A5 - yes, but any designation beyond that, you got me. I got to see Rickie and Wyatt Rice play a duo show put on by the woman who coordinates the CT Bluegrass Music Association, at a small barn out in the country (yeah, Connecticut has some country...). Always great to see such fine musicians up close and personal.
