    Default Dawg picks

Has anyone else had issues with picks that are this thick? I find when i try to play with them, the pick is so thick, it runs right across the strings without actually picking them.

Perhaps its my picking technique. I dont anchor, and i hold the pick with my pointer finger facing the tailpiece.

I'm used to using medium gauge fender guitar picks. I have tried heavy's and extra heavy's and have the same issue as i do with the dawg picks. Playing with the Dawg II's i just cant seem to get any noise to come out of the mandolin.

I tried the Dawg picks and didn't like them at all. The thickness wasn't a problem, but they just seemed to be quiet, somehow. I don't know how pick material could make the mando quiet, but they were noticeably hushed compared with any other ones. Then I got a Blue Chip, and the pick experimenting ended.

the last two times I've seen Grisman he gave me the pic he used for the show. I went home and used them but just can't see how he gets what he gets from his pick. Glad he knows how though. That's one thing separating him from the rest of us I guess.

They're all I use and prefer. I do like the larger diameter of the Dawg II, much better.

I've had good luck customizing Dawg picks with a couple of grades of sandpaper. The mass of the pick feels good, and if you thin the working edge it brightens the sound quite a bit. Then again, it may have something to do with the disparity between Mr. Grisman's and my musicianship.

I like them. I like the tone I get with my mandolin/string combos. Dawg really uses them. This is from the floor of the stage at Sellersville, PA from last April's show.

I like their shape but I have to bevel an edge on them to get any volume out of them. Once I do that I dig 'em. But right now I'm a Red Bear guy.

It's all I've ever used, and anything else sounds too thin/plinky. That goes for all the boutique pics especially, gofiggur.

I hate those things. I can't get any volume at all with them.

I like them, they seem to glide over the strings. I've not had a problem with volume, but I have a gorilla type body and thus gorilla arms and hands.

I bought some of the Dawg picks, but I returned them and got my money back. I didn't sound like Dawg at all!

I like the Dawg picks, but I like the Golden Gate version better. They are identical in thickness ( I measured with a micrometer). But the GG material seems to have just a bit more flex than the Dawg. I drill 5 or 6 #40 holes in them to help secure the grip.
I find that I don't have to "dig in" to get the same volume as thinner picks.

Now gypsy jazz picks, some of those suckers are as thick as poker chips, but the guitarists who know how to use them get great tone and lots of volume.

The single most impressive thing I find about DG is how in the world he can play mandolin with those dreadful picks and still sound great anyways.

I don't regularly use them myself, but I have a couple. They are pretty rounded and slick, so one thing to check is the angle of your pick stroke, that can affect volume and tone and cause you to sort of glide over the strings.

I tried a 'Golden Gate' pick a couple of years ago. I think that in thickness they are similar to the Dawg picks. All i can say that for me, on my Mandolin, thick picks totally kill any tone & volume. Other folk swear by them - same old story,if it works for you ...........,

How do I say this, David has a very good microphone and sound man. He does not have to worry about being heard or how he sounds and the secret to his tone is not the pick. Would it not be great to have all that technology behind you? It would allow me to sound a lot better than I am .

I have one Dawg pick and a couple of Golden Gates. My main issue with the Dawg is the size. With my technique, both the Dawg and the GGs are more mellow sounding than when I use a Dunlop Big Stubby. But the size of the Dawg doesn't feel like it fits in my folded up finger as well as the GG.

I prefer gen1 of the Dawg picks. It's not what I use daily, but can certainly use in a pinch.

Dawg has a forceful, strong pick attack. He handed me his Giacomel one time, but before he did, he banged some chop chords in my face. I felt like the guy in that old Maxell tape ad, sitting in the chair in front of a blaring stereo system.

I've used Dawgs, Golden Gates and MANY others (I suffer from PAS) don't really care much for them...they're OK but not my go to picks.

Recently my pick rotation has been; Red Bears, Wegens, Bluechips, and vintage T******e s***l (OOPS! Sorry!)
