    Default chopped Stew-Mac humbucker kit?

What do you all think of taking the Stew-Mac 6 string humbucker kit and removing the center two sixths of the spools and bracket, and trimming the shim and magnet by the same amount, to reduce it to a 4 string.

Then for about 25 bucks (plus wire and winding time) I can have 4 adjustable elements on a small size pickup for my mando bird.

Crazy idea, but I'm on a budget here. What do you think?

I hadn't priced the wire, looks like 25.00 for a spool, so the total would be about $50.00 plus 10,000 hand wraps.

If I were you, I'd buy a "blade" humbucker and save yourself the (tedious!) work of trying to hand-wrap a pickup. If you're concerned about the physical dimensions of the pickup, try a half of a P-Bass pickup (which my luthier installed in my Mandobird).

I'm showing my ignorance here, but wouldn't the half pbass pickup only have two pole pieces? Does it fit right in with no modifications?

another post shows a tandem coil humbucker , custom wound , Brass cover , plated shiny.

cover size is looking like the 2 outer adjustable pole screws were Eliminated, there.

I found stacked coil humbuckers for Strat style format , to work OK,
'gold' Lace Sensor from Fender , or Mr Lace.
and EMG Select, both seem decent. set askew they don't seem so wide.

H_L_S , .. the P bass has 4 poles , but they are paired .. .. to be on either side of the Bass string.
impedance as I read from others here is designed around using both.

What I hate about using a gtr p.u. on an electric mandolin is IT' S TOO DAMN BIG! The proportions are way off. I like the idea of chopping the bobbin down. Making p.u.'s is fun!
    too many strings
