    Default tone wood suppliers

I am curious as to how to approach buying tonewood.

I recently inquired about a certain type of wood. I was looking to buy one or maybe two sets for tops. I both e-mailed and phoned several suppliers and found out that some have a minimum order of as much as $200.00. Is this typical?

In another instance I received an initial response but even after e-mail and long distance telephone follow up never heard more. Do you have to be a big ticket buyer before suppliers will pay attention?

I went ahead and bought what I need from Stew-Mac even though it was not exactly what I wanted.

Just curious as to other's experiences.

I ordered small quantities from John Preston @ old world tonewood and he sent me the wood and said to pay for what I wanted and ship the rest back (I ended up keeping everything). It seems that's a pretty common experience with some of the 'better' suppliers, at least in my experience.

I recommend Bruce aka "Spruce" here on the forum. He is ok with a single piece, or he was when I last bought.

I don't think there's anyone anywhere that I could give a stronger recommendation than Bruce at Orca's Island. The site is HERE.

Old Standard in Fulton, Mo. is a very good supplier that will listen to what you want and in the quantity you want.

Old Standard or Orcas Island. The rest have some catching up to do.
