    Hi, I put together a video of how I play Little Wing on mandolin. It's chords only, not at Jim R's level but meant for a beginning player.

    I use this arrangement to play an instrumnental version with my guitar player.

    I just love a Labor Day Sunday like today when I can fiddle around with something like this and not feel too guilty.

    It is a great jam tune especially if you are playing with semi rocker types. My boy is a rock guitarist and Little Wing is something we can both jam on. Starting in Em you can play G or G pentatonic scales against it. It's not hard to keep a good jam going. It's also fun to mess with the tempo. Forget the Jimmy or Stevie Ray versions, just do your own thang.

    I play it:

    Em G
    Am Em
    Bm A#m Am C (nice decending sound with just a touch at the A#m)
    G F C D

    It wasn't too clear in the video but I play it:

    Em (0220) {2 bars}
    G (0032) {2 bars}
    Am (2245) {2 bars}
    Em7 (0240) {2 bars}
    ==
    Bm (4457) {1½ bars}
    Bb (3356) {½ bars}
    Am (2235) {1 bar}
    C (0320) {1 bar}
    ===
    G (0032) {1 bar}
    Fadd9 (0202) {1 bar}
    C (0320) {1 bar}
    D (745x) {4 bars}

    Been really liking my new Kimble octave for rock interpretations. Sounds great for Little Wing:

    Hey Mike. I like the chord choices you posted. I have to admit my teenage son came up with these by ear. not bad eh?

    Not bad at all, love to see/hear him play it (does he post to youtube?). I kinda knew the chords but tried re-arranging them to use open posistions to get a ringing sound to the song.

    Mike,
    we haven't really posted on youtube. The kid's pretty good at figuring stuff out. In the 6th grade, he figured out the entire arrangement for Stairway to Heaven. Not just a few cool licks but the whole song. He and a pal played the whole thing at the grade school talent show. Brought the house down. It completely hooked him on performing.

    Change the subject. Who the heck is this Jim Richter dude? Jim, every youtube you've post has been outstanding!!! Come play out in Denver, I'll buy a ticket to see you play!!

    I dunno, play Wild Horses and get it over with. Wild Horses uses many of the same chords and sounds a lot better. I hope nobody takes that the wrong way.

    Find someone to pay me lots of money (or even a living wage!) to come out to Denver and I'd be happy to!

    The chord you wrote out for Fadd9 0202 doesn't match what you spoke and showed in the video 0303. I guess video is right? Thanks--Lou

    Can I suggest the Fadd9 sounds better as 2333, also Em7 as 747x. Look in to my toolh Chord Calculus (iPhone, iPad and Mac Desktop).

    Philips, Grier and Flinner do a real nicer version of this, starts a little slow but hang in there. Was playing along to it last night thinking what a perfect song it is for mandolin.

    This part here:

    Bm (4457) {1½ bars}
    Bb (3356) {½ bars}
    Am (2235) {1 bar}

    I've always just slid down the chord form fret by fret, so then playing a Bbm 3346. I learned this decades ago from sheet music acquired who-knows-where, and it just makes more sense. Reasonably sure that's how Jimi played it. But as I say in my signature, "that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

    Just in case the OP of this 15-year-old thread ever looks in - it's been over two years since he last logged in.
