I wanted to share these findings of "Conjunto Som Brasileiro" on youtube. I think it's great playing and it's very rare to hear the tenor guitar as the soloists instrument. There are several more tunes with Bandolim on their channel.

Great! Danilo Brito has a track or two on his wonderful CD on which he plays tenor. #These videos do a nice job of showing choro rhythms, too- very clear.

I love how those Del Vecchios look, but I've always been chicken to buy them off of ebay... <sigh>

Do you think a US-made wood-body resonator would have a similar sound? The metal National tenors I've heard seem too strident for this kind of music.

Pedro Amorim has a great CD out called Violao Tenor that also has some great playing on it. I've seen pictures of him playing a Del Vecchio, but FWIW the pictures in the CD booklet all show a small-bodied wooden non-resonator tenor.

Hm, I've to say that my metal reso tenor sounds very nice for choro and other things. But they do not sound all the same. The bigger problem I have is that my 58cm scale is really long to play choro tunes. They use much more different notes than the irish tunes that I play on the tenor usually. The Del Vecchios have a shorter scale and they use the CGDA tuning.

Btw.: There are even some players who use the tenor banjo for choro, or at least one:

Choro das Três - Chorinho Brasil

Choro das Três - Aguenta Seu Fulgêncio

    And Renato Anesi.

I have his CD "Rosa Dos Tempos" and it's really good. No traditional Choro, but interesting choro-based modern stuff. He plays a lot of stringed instruments on his CD. Tenor, Bandolim, Sixstring Git., Cavaquinho and interestingly the Viola de dez cordas which you don't hear very often.

The body of this guitar looks great. But that thing has had some brutal refrets in its life...

Lots of neat pix/links though. Check out the blonde DV-tenor!

Here's Pedro Amorim playing the small-bodied tenor I mentioned upthread:

Yes, had a great experience at the Mandolin Symposium last summer when Danilo Brito walked into a dorm party we had going and picked up a beautiful tenor and just wailed on it for, maybe 30 minutes. Astounding player with an awesome repertoire at his fingers. He seemed to be totally fluent on it. There are a number of older videos I've seen from Brazil that show the tenor being played. Thanks for posting those links!

What is he saying in the interviews? I can hear smatterings of the words Del Vecchio, Garoto, Bando da Lua, etc. But anyone else know what he's talking about?
