I'm pretty sure they've got the prize but to avoid false info I won't name it just yet. We should jam man I doubt I'll enter the contest. I'm not exactly a mando player. But if I see very few contestants I might decide to waste 20 bucks ;D

Sure wish I could go, but I'm going to be out of town for the week leading up to it. I don't have a hope in heck of getting a kitchen pass.

Incidentally, if either of you guys are flatpickers, I hope you'll be around for the September 20 BABA show. A few of us are putting together a workshop with Tim May that afternoon, and Tim will be playing on stage for the concert. The workshop will start at 1 p.m., run for about four hours, and cost $60. Should be a lot of fun. Shoot me a note if you're interested.

    Best,
    Joe

So the prize is a case of Ritz Crackers?

    Yum!

I would love to jam, although I won't be back in town until next week. I am attempting to practice in the vacation condo. It's pretty close quarters, so I can't really let'r rip.

Joe, I am a pretty indifferent flatpicker. I am going to try to come to the monthly jam, though, and I hope I get to meet you.

Well since nobody mentioned where or when it is I googled it and came up with Aug. 16 in League City, TX. For a few more details take a look at This Link.

Hey Daniel - Wouldn't surprise me if we've met. At least I'd imagine we know some of the same people. I only make it out to BABA two or three times a year, though, and I've never really managed to get to know the League City crowd the way I should. I tend to jam with a smaller circle of amigos in north and central Houston. I keep telling myself I really need to make it to more BABA shows, but with life, job, kids, etc., I never do as well as I should. Looking forward to making it out in September though. Let's do some picking then.

I am glad Kelly is a judge rather than competitor. He would make mincemeat out of me.

Its the 3rd saturday of this month.

Joe- ya we've probably been somewhere near one another and I'm sure we know some of the same people. I tend to make the rounds . I don't know if I'll be there or not actually in Sept. I'm pretty sure winfield is that weekend and I believe Ill be able to go. Anyway.

Ya the judges are pretty easy to guess. I'm pretty sure I know who they are but as you said...its a secret! Shhhhhhh!

Yeah. Mum's the word about the judges. I wouldn't have said anything myself, except that I have no basis to know other than a wild-*** guess. I believe the other two judges are Marvin the Martian and Al Gore.

Hey Daniel - I checked out your myspace page. I'm about 90% sure I picked with you in a big group a while back - probably last fall. If it was you, and I remember right, I think I loaned you my Collings D1 for a while. I remember it specifically because you (or whoever it was), played some monster rhythm guitar on it. I was hanging on for dear life, and skipped more beaks than I took because of the speed.

I think the last time I was at BABA was when Steve Kaufman came down in January. I was one of the three guys sponsoring his workshops, and spent some time helping out behind Kaufman's booth. (Incidentally, we're getting Orrin Star down next January for workshops on guitar and mandolin. Save the date!)

Just a couple of blocks away. I'm at 11th and Columbia - right next door to the car wash on the corner there. Sorry I missed y'all. We'll have to get together and pick one of these days.

My buddy Ron and I are driving up from San Antonio. I've seen the BABA guitar contest before. For the contest entry of $20 the participants got just about as much in freebies.

    Watching is free

Besides the F9 the winner gets an entry to Winfield.

We're kind thinking about making a swing past Fuller's on our way in. Are there any other good shops for Mandolins in the Houston area?

    Hey,
The Oklahoma State Mandolin Championship is coming September 28th. It's at the Tulsa State Fair. It has 5 places: $500 - $350 - $200 - $150 & $50. There is also Flatpicking Guitar the same day with the same prizes. Please pass the word.

I hope to see you folks there tomorrow. #I'm as nervous as some kind of creature in a apple factory, or something like that.

I'll be the guy with the mandolin.

I'll be the somewhat portly gent wearing a mandocafe t-shirt and playing a Collings.

I've had it (MF-5V) for about a month now. I love my old Givens, but you know... MAS and all that. It is way nicer than I deserve.
