    I have recently acquired an old instrument, but I am not sure what exactly it is and I was wondering whether anyone could help me? It is part of the Mandolin family, in that you play it like a Mandolin, but it has a body a bit like a Banjo...

    It's a banjolin! Go to eyecandy and you'll see more like it.
