Shaun my current mandolin teacher plays it and I wanted see how other versions are played. I am thinking about learning it.

There is also a nice version in the Joe Carr/Allan Munde book "Texas Fiddle tunes". The book is definitely worth checking out.

Hey, Shaun. Remind me next time we meet and we'll pick Red Apple. Maybe I'll figure out a feasible phrase to end part B with by then. I think I learned it from an old Arthur Smith fiddle version.

After listening to the midi files I know I've heard that one before. I like the Benson version the best too. I've been working on it tonight and I can play it about medium to slow speed now. I figure I'll have it memorized pretty well in a few days and be able to work up to speed. The second part is the easiest but I think I like it the best. Thanks to Jim for bringing that one to everyones minds.

Scott Nygaard's version on guitar shows a lot of what can be done with this tune, and the notation is also available on the Ragtime for Fiddle and #Mandolin

If you are into ragtime, this book is a must have.

I think that it's simple enough that you should be able to use it as a good tune to help you learn notation. While I can read tab faster than notation, I use every chance I can get to read notation. It eventually gives you a greater vocabulary with other instruments. Especially for something like ragtime, where you might likely be playing with almost any kind of horn, piano, etc.
