My 1923 Gibson A2 has been said to have that Sheraton brown color.
Are all the Gibsons of that color Sheraton brown? What does it refer to? How is it verified?

Outstanding snake-head! Loar era, Sheraton Brown. Is that an aluminum top bridge? I can't imagine a nicer A.
No its the original bridge, just the way my flash bounced off it. Yes its a honey of a mandolin. My main instruemtn since the mid 80s. Gibson 1923 A2 snakehead SN# 73934. (No cracks or repairs, all finish scratches my own fault.)
Until recently, I did not know that it's color was called Sheraton Brown. Who was Sheraton? Is Sheraton just a design feature that is attractive today. Years ago nobody seemed to care, as long as it was a snakehead.
from Google search:
Sheraton (1780-1820)
Sheraton is a neoclassical furniture style characterized by delicate straight lines, light construction, contrasting veneers, and neoclassical motifs and ornamentation. It is named for English designer Thomas Sheraton who published his designs in "The Cabinet Makers and Upholsterers Drawing Book" in 1791. It was the most reproduced style in the United States during the Federal period.
The characteristic rich Brown color he used was identified after him as Sheraton Brown.

Isn't that the same color as all those hotel lobbys? Argh!

Thanks, Gail. That's some great trivia to pick up. I always just assumed it was only a color name.

Interesting background, thanks. He did not live very long, did he.

Drop-dead gorgeous sheraton brown Gibson, by the way!
After 20 years of playing it I had the thing set up last year, and the frets treated. I thought it played well before, but now its like butter. That pic was before I had it set up, so the bridge is level now.
I have taken that mandolin with me all over the world. And many times I stayed in a Sheraton.
and the serial number is 7392x what?Originally Posted by (JeffD @ Feb. 28 2008, 23:50)

I was just looking at an old video of Peter Ostroushko and the Mando-Boys.
It was a quartet, two mandolins, a mandola, and a mandocello. All Sheraton brown Gibson A models, and the second mandolin was a snakehead.
I don't know the models or the years but those of you with good eyes - check out the videos on you tube. There are several.
