Wow! No chance I can make it, but I would like to. Chirps Smith is the real deal in Midwest old-time music. Equally at home on the banjo, fiddle and mandolin, knows thousands of tunes and a great guy too.
I'll be there. I'm staying at the Stone Mill just a couple blocks away. Bob and Gail put on a first-rate event. The food served is--I kid you not--gourmet fare and not to be missed.
The picking is extraordinary too. Last year was my first year and I got to stumble through John Salyer tunes with Bruce Molsky. Not too shabby.
Lost on the trails of The Deep North
When I saw the picture of Chirps holding an F4 on the web site a few weeks ago, I really had hoped he would be teaching the mando workshops.
Last year was my first year, too. #I was sitting in a jam on Saturday afternoon, and a few people started dropping by and joining in. #One of them was this unassuming guy wearing a "Farm King" seed cap, who played a pretty mean fiddle. #I snuck a peek at his name tag, and was blown away to find I was jamming with Chirps Smith.
Here's a picture I took of him at last year's Gathering:
And don't let Fred Keller's comment fool you. I watched him playing with Molsky, and he was tearing it up as much as Bruce was.
Hope to get some jamming time with you again this year, Fred.
I'm heading down to the Bluff Country Gathering a week from today!
I know Fred Keller will be there; anybody else?
All of us here in Illinois are proud of old Chirps. Don't miss any of his shows or workshops.
totally spaced on the dates. Dang it. Fred, I shoulda took heed to your suggestion more rapidly. I was thinking the end of the month for some odd reason. Looked like a blast, pretty much workshops and whatnot.
Ooh, he card reads good.
