    oh... my... gosh...

ive been bitten by the tenor guitar bug. #amazing!! #why have i never explored this before? #haha #i have the one that im borrowing tuned like a mandolin (duh), and i just cannot get enough. #mandolin has been my one and only for the last 5 years, and it feels refreshing to hear the same tunes in a lower key and also having the challenge of a much larger scale! #its teaching me to loosen up my grip on the neck and also its teaching me to learn to pace myself all over again. #so lets hear it! #is there something neat that i should try with the tenor guitar while ive got it in my possession? #any other stories, advice, or comments will be great #

Thilewannabe, Check out the CBOM for many Tenor AND guitar searched threads. Several folks tune them GDAE down an octave like an octave mandolin. I'm itcin' for an old harmony or kay on tenorguitar-bay to try it out on....

The Tenor Guitar Registry on yahoo/groups might also be a source of info and contacts.

I recently got myself a Lark in the Morning tenor guitar and started in. The chord thinking for tenor guitar and tenor banjo is a little different. Yea the string intervals are the same, so the chord shapes are the same, but the string band music popular on the tenor has a different chord progression, a sort of infite resolution, moving down in fifths all the time.

Its a lot of fun. I don't think the tenor guitar (or banjo) will ever take the place of the mandolin in my constellation, but I am sure enjoying my expanding view of the capabilities and possibilities of instruments tuned in fifths.

(My only complaint is that the darned instrument I got has a fret marker on the ninth fret instead of the tenth. It is driving me crazy. )

There's no reason a new tenor guitar section can't be hosted in the same general area as CBOM and electrics. We've allowed tenors to be sold on the classifieds for some time for the simple reason in tuning similarities. I'll keep an eye out to see if there's enough interest expressed here. I'm aware there's a Yahoo group available but don't think they allow image posting, which seems like should be a fundamental need in discussing instruments, and I suspect it's a different crowd.

I was given a tenor guitar when I was 18 by a buddy of mine. It was in great shape. My buddy wanted to do a "Pete Townsend" to it. #I figured it would have a better life as a corner decoration in my bedroom. It was an electic and I remember tuning it to EADG. #I didn't know a thing about it. #I took it down to a music shop that I knew of in NJ and he told me it was from the 1930's.

So the brilliant rocket scientist that I was, I chose to give the darn think away to a person who collected antique instruments #

As a dumb teenager I guess I figured that playing Rush, Def Leppard and Led Zepplin on the darn thing wouldn't look cool around the ladies. #I chose poorly #

When I think of the things I avoided and the things I did, motivated by wanting to look cool around the ladies - I shudder.

In a different type of forum I could tell stories.

Yup, I've got me one of them things too. #I don't know if classical is your thing or not, but I really like playing the prelude and allemande from Bach's cello suits on it -- you get to thwak that low G with some muscle. # A version for GDAE is here:

. . . and I think a tenor guitar forum would be great.

Hi Guys, Great to see another forum for the discussion of tenor guitars. Just a comment to say that we do have a Photos section on the Tenor Guitar Registry for members who want to post photos of their tenor (or plectrum) guitars. Cheers, Steve (one of the Moderators of the Tenor Guitar Registry)
