Thread: Guinness type stout

Spilled the dregs of a growler of high desert imperial stout on the edge of a GOM, going for that organic golden top color vibe. Anyone ever use a stout for stain, or should one just drain the dregs into ones mouth? Pigment or dye? lightfast? TIA

Boy that's tough... I can't address the ... um ... substantive finishing questions, but the proposition moves me to profound ambivalence....

A stout-colored instrument is a wonderful concept, in direct conflict with 'what a terrible waste of good stout!'

    Hmmm....

    Ah, Bill, yer grand!

I think you may be on to something here -- I think it would be fun to have a "stout-burst" finish, perhaps with the headstock inlay's font modeled after that on Guinness' offerings.

Try Young's Double Chocolate Stout. I don't know about the finishing qualities for wood but it sure finishes nicely in ma belly.

    MMMmmmm Young's Double Chocolate Stout.

Imperial stouts are like that but with more fire.

    Oh yes our favorite topic.
My vote is for Old Peculiar but I think he wants an answer. A sponge /rag water and careful attention to the edges of the stain?

If you sell it to the right guy, this won't be the last time the instrument has beer spilled on it.

    Nice lists of beverages! #

    But will it -work-?

Personally, #ah dunno bout a -burst-... #just the brown, thanks. #If it has a head on it, please, not right in the middle there?

I have a friend (a senior lady) who says that she thinks that a lot of burst patterns on mandolins look like "bald spots" ....

Good point -- maybe the better approach is an opaque creamy top over a rich dark body, just like a proper pint. (Kind of like the Rigel Q-95 homage to espresso.)

In Tomas O'Crothain's book, An t-Oileanach, he has an account of crates of "stuff" being washed ashore from a shipwreck of the Kery coast. He says that "it made a great dye for the geansais (sweaters) and the pigs thrived on it. It turned out to be tea. Might make a good stain, it certainly made a good story. Being tea, it wouldn't even be a waste.....

In the picture, that top looks awfully close to the ground. Are you sure the staining occurred before you finished the stout?

Next pint of 'that which is good for me' ,
I will have to judge how close sheraton brown is
to the St James Gate burned malt beverage.

For the last two instruments I built, I used fish glue as a sealer colored with Brer' Rabbit Blackstrap Molasses. Fish glue gives a nice yellow color and the molasses darken it. If anyone wants to see photos of my Walnut Woman lap dulcimer with this tint on her, let me know and I will send you some pics. I must warn you, however, that she is "R" rated!

Brad how was that stained? Conventional stains or an alternative like Bill we looking for? Lovely looking color on the quilt too.

    hey jaime-

that is actually just in the white. i wanted to see how it would darken up so I played around with it in photoshop. someone commented it reminded them of a guiness, so i figured it was fitting here. Turned out like this (dan can give the stain details):

Perhaps the stain dispenser had one of those nitrogen-charged widgets in it?
