As I begin to plan to build #3 mando related instrument the question of tone bar size and placement came to mind.

I am sure there are plenty of links to threads which deal with this subject; however, I am curious if anyone has experimented with integral tone bars actually carved into the top.

    If so pros & cons?

I built a 2 point with a low arch with an x brace carved into the top 15 years age. It is holding up fine.

    Jim,
You call this a mandolin-related instrument, so you'll be improvising on the tone bar size and placement. I'd take a similar sized instrument (whether it be smaller or larger or the same size as a mandolin) and start from there. Final size will depend on your own tap tuning method.
As for carved tonebars, this has been discussed here before. Seems to me the consensus was that it was a lot of work, and didn't have any obvious advantages.
I saw a picture of some guy who built a mando with the tonebars on the outside of the top. Interesting concept, but I have never seen another one. Can't find the picture now, but I think it was posted on the cafe.
A picture or sketch of the instrument you are contemplating would help.

would direction of the grain in the bars have any impact on whether carve them?

Bill - Is the one you were thinking about w/external tone bars? Doesn't appear that they are carved into the top though. #A very cool looking design. Sorry I don't know anything about the builder....... except maybe Sam?

That's the one. Very cool design. You're right; they aren't carved in. That guy has very innovative ideas. Do you know anything about him and can you provide a link to that thread? Thanks,
