I just got done peeling the peghead overlays off a Michael Kelly mandolin. They aren't wood. Seem to be some kind of man-made material rather like bakelite.

Does anyone know exactly what this stuff is? I'm just curious, nice new real wood overlays are going on.

    Could it be Micarta?
    A couple of mandolins
    A couple guitars
    An Upright Bass
    Some banjos
    Wax Paper over a comb
    A Loar era Didjeridoo

Several builders use a black fiber peghead veneer. Gibson starting doing so in 1970. I don't know if they still do or not.

Its black fiber material, an impregnated wood paper material common for decades on many many Asian as well as some American instruments

Its the same material the pick up bobins are made of on vintage electric guitars

Thanks Scott. I wasn't sure whether it was some kind of plastic or not.

Do you know if the peghead front finish is the same stuff as on the rest of the mando? It is quite thick, very hard, glass clear and seems impervious to every solvent I own. It came off with the "inlays" and some of the overlay material.
