Has anyone out there noticed on the majority of old teens gibsons with sunken tops that they are usually one piece tops. Also it seem the three piece ones seem to hold up better. I wonder how many gibson turned out with one piece tops. Every time I take the back off a sunken one it's one piece. Is it just chance or has anybody else noticed this?

I have not noticed any relationship to one piece tops but rather to instruments carved too thin or sanded too thin due to one or more refinishes and loose braces. The last top I replaced was a three piece that had failed due to being sanded too thin during multiple refinishes.

The original (not sanded and refinished) pillowtops I have seen have been mostly 2-piece. Graduated too thin, that's all. I have a 1912 F-4 with a 1-piece top that's so thick it barely emits a sound.

I guess I should say all the ones that were sunken because they were sanded too thin have been one piece. Probably just chance. It just stands to reason too thin equals sunken top.
