As most of you know, Curtis Buckhannon is one of the best old-time mando players anywhere, with a unique style all this own. He incorporates ragtime, Celtic and Hispanic influences into his old-time playing and his use of tremolo is incredible. He put out three albums and did a lot performing with the with the Ill-Mo Boys, including Merlefest this past year. The Buckhannon Brothers now have two CDs out with a third on the way. Curtis' brother Dennis is also one of the best OT backup guitarists anywhere, applying almost a jazz guitar approach to old-time. They also have a spontaneous, whacky, but clean sense of humor not quite as over the top as Homer and Jethro, but close.
They are playing this Sat., June 16, from 8-10 p.m. at the Whistle Stop Frozen Custard place (314-521-1600) at #1 Carson Rd., in Ferguson, MO at the corner of Florissant Rd and Carson at the old railroad station up on the hill, about 3 miles south of Hwy 270. The website is www.whistlestopdepot.com.
This is a cool event they do every year that you could bring the whole family to. They play outside, the music is free, the ice cream is great and a long train usually goes by right behind the place sometime during the concert, which the kids usually like. People bring lawn chairs and just sit outside, eat ice cream and listen to the B. Bros. all evening.
If you can get to the St. Louis area Saturday night, I will see you there.
