I walked into a store recently with cash and spousal approval for a major purchase. I wanted an oval, and played ones in the $1400 to $2000 range. But the mando that kept calling me back was a Big Muddy M-4, Sitka top and rosewood back. This thing absolutely sings! To me, it sounded superior to the archtops that were three and four times the price, so I bought it instead.

Those rosewood backed flat tops have a great, complex tones. You'll be in heaven! Congratulations.

Beautiful wood. What kind of rosewood is it? I can't remember seeing much Indian with that kind of figure.

Okay, not as nice as yours, but here's my Big Muddy mahogany-top M-11 wide neck. Posed in my backyard at my favorite practice spot.

    cbarry,
That all Mahog one has my favorite BiMu/MidMo tone followed at a hair by that rosewood one above. Both are great.

    Thanks, all.

I really liked the M-11 they had, too. I've always liked the sound of that model. There was just something about this one that made me take it home. It just seemed to want to play O'Carolan, while the M-11 seemed to want to play St. James Infirmary.

Shaun, the old Mid-Mo Web site says it's Pau Ferro rosewood.

I just decided to give Big Muddy Mandolins a call to find out about what everyone around here is talking about. Mike is really a fair and honest guy who you never feel weird about picking his brain about mandolin making and/or anything else you feel like talkin about. I gotta hand it to him -he has been "there and back" literally in a lot of life altering situations while being a gigging musician in a band most of his middle aged life.
I wound up with a pre-owned, 1.5 year old "Mini Mo" model w/ gigbag. Perfect to hang up alongside my desk at work in between students and to use as a traveller if need be. He's not a stickler for extra add ons either like bridges and strap buttons. He even said he's not into making money - just a living and making friends. He made one with me.
***Look how I'm raving and the mando hasn't even arrived yet. No fear...I'm positive that it'll be the tits!
...am i allowed to say that on this forum? - we'll see
    frshwtrbob
p.s. Buy his stuff - he deserves the bread.

I was thinking about buying a big muddy mandola. It seems like that they would come with a case ,but they do not. Any owners out there know of a hard case that will fit them?

They can be bought with a gig bag or a case at the (original) buyer's option. Since I've bought all of my MidMo/Big Muddys preowned, I've taken what was opted for by someone else. Thus, my mandolin has a gigbag, but both of my mandolas came with cases. No worries there! Just order a case from Mike Dulak (Mr. Big Muddy himself).

congratulations - i've got an M-4 as well but your backside - so to speak - is a beaut'! i think they're very satisfying mandolins - if i don't play mine for a while and then do, it sounds bright and fresh and very welcome-back-home-able.

be sure to join the big-muddy/mid-missouri social group.

    jamie - bimu/midmo - great.
